Hi All,
I have a vintage Craftsman Drill Press from around 1950. Attached is a picture of a similar model.
It runs fine but I am having some troubles with it. I tightened the quill brake last night and when I lossened it up it's become very hard to move the arm up and down.
The table will rotate but it wil not move up/down/or at an angle. The head seems to be stuck on the shaft as well and won't budge up or down. I don't want to exert too much force on any of these parts until I know for sure they're supposed to move. I will probably restore this drill press to look like some of these great restorations I've seen here, but I need some guidance on how to take it apart.
Any help is appreciated!
Steve

Back off the quill lock one turn, tap in gently with a plastic hammer. That should free the tapered lock nut.

If you want to disassemble and lube the quill, remove the two bolts on the bottom of the upper housing. The right one releases the return spring. Pull the spring housing off. The left bolt allows the pinion handle to be pulled out and the spindle will drop down. Clean, lube and reassemble.

You can do either a full resto or simply pull it apart and clean it. You've got 60 years of grime and goo inhibiting smooth operation. There's quite a few teardowns here on GJ, and many more over on OWWM.org.

Source an exploded diagram from OWWM, take it apart, clean it up, and that DP will run and function like new.
