This set came up for sale/trade locally this morning. I have no need for another box but I kind of like the looks of this set. Can anybody identify and date them? Thanks.

Seller's description:

"Vintage Snap On box. Olde but a good one. Had it for many years. It's been a good box it was just time to sell it. It's not new at all but it's a snapon".

That's a nic set and worth collecting. If they are cheap buy them. Find them a proper home.

Thanks everyone! Seller is asking $550/trades and has promised to give me a call tonight (PST). Wornouttoolman has kindly provided this wonderful link from a 1941 catalog:

I don't know value but if it was close by and I could get it for $300 or so I would buy it. It may be worth more than the $550 to some. If you get it post a few pictures up close!

Couple tings, but first off. Sweet boxes.

1.) I'm 99% sure those belong to a member on here. I've seen those pics before. Actually that pic is on the collecting SO site. Which makes me wonder how recent and thus accurate the pics are of the actual boxes.
2.) Actually I'd be more interested in the other boxes the same person has listed for $550. Much more useable as a tool box. Again they belong to a member here.
3.) I'm pretty sure that is a later production of that box (early 40's say ~42?). Meaning it should (IIRC) have drawer slides and stops on the drawers. Which I think is a requirement for a using box.
4.) Something is up with the drawer pulls on the bottom most 2 drawers of the roll cab. I don't think they are original. :dunno:

If you do buy it please post some pics. As for price. Yea I guess it is a fair price for that box. Just depends if you are a collector or a user? For a user you can no doubt get alot more workable box for your money. However the cool factor here is definitely higher than a more modern box. I actually have the top/bottom combo before that one (1937), and while it is cool, the useability is not that high. However I didn't pay much at all for it, so I'm content with the $/cool vs $/useable storage space. If you have the space, $ and ambition, maybe try a package deal for both sets? I'd much rather have the other stack than the one you posted. IMHO the other stack is much more usable, plus I really like those roll up front covers.

The top box is early, like 38-41/ the bottom is later, and does not have the correct pulls on the bottom drawers.

I don't even think the pics are of the same box, notice no silver trim around the badge on the 1st like on the 2nd pic. The second pic is from the collecting snap on website, and the 1st pic is actually from an old ebay listing. I'm starting to question the integrity of the seller. :dunno:

Snapmom, I thought they changed the lock location and added drawer slides after 39 on that box. Hence my guess of it being a 41 or later box?

These are two diff pics. So all this is not right. The top box with trim is early. 38-41. The 38 cat shows this, but does not show the lock, but you may be right. Any pics of these without the lock (other than the cats) please post. The early bottoms had the wheels mounted on the outside, later they were mounted on the bottom.

Well we may not get to the bottom of this mystery. The seller emailed me this morning and said he would call me after his work day ended. It's after 9pm and I have not heard from him. His ad has been deleted from Craigslist. I want to thank everyone for their input and opinions which were much appreciated despite the outcome. Cheers. -Rusty

I think it may be for the better honestly. The more I looked into it, the more shady and dishonest the ad appeared to be. :dunno:

I wouldn't loose sleep over not getting. Think of it as a blessing in disguise.
