Help with welding table/work bench?

Hi everyone. I have been lurking for a long time and would like to get some opinions.

I purchased a welding table that is 3x6 and in great shape. I don't weld currently but for $100 I couldn't pass it up.
However in doing so I now do not have room for a work bench also.
I purchased a solid frame door for $25 to use as a topper for it instead of the steal but it's heavy and a pain if I do want to take it off and grind stuff or maybe even weld.
How can I use it as both a welding table and work table?
I was thinking heavy plastic like the truck bed ones and they sell cheap.

Umm. What kind of work are you doing that you can't use the metal surface for? All of my benches have steel tops. Either mild or stainless.

Cover it with 1/4" tempered Masonite.

Hinge the door to the steel bench-up for steel-down for wood.
