Help with wiring my new 60 gal compressor

Picked up a brand new King Canada 6.5hp 60 gallon compressor and it will not turn on.

I have it wired directly to the 40 amp stablok breaker with romex 10-2 wire. I only have about 4 feet of wire since the compressor is right beside the service panel by the door.

I have 122v at both L1 and L2 at the switch. Turning the switch on also has the same for both lines at the motor.

Not sure what I'm missing here. Thanks for any help. Cheers

Both line in are 120v, 240v when added together. It's a 2 pole 40 amp breaker

Yes, but what I'm saying is, the L1 > GND (or neutral) voltage doesn't matter in this case. Make sure you're actually measuring ~240v across L1 and L2 at the switch.

Couple of things here

The tank label means nothing. Go by the motor nameplate

Motor nameplate says 5hp. You need 35a rated wire (28a FLC x 1.25). #10 nm-b is technically too small

Does this compressor have a motor starter? Or just a pressure switch wired straight to the motor?

Stablok breaker panels are garbage and could be the issue with voltage. but we need more info on the voltage metering first

You should have 240v. You need to measure line to line not line to neutral or ground, which would give you 120v… and where are you getting these measurements?

If you have 240VAC across L1 and L2 on the motor side of the pressure switch, try reseting the thermal cutout on the motor itself.

Did you actually measure the voltage at the breaker terminals between lugs and at the compressor? Or are you just saying thats what voltage your service has?

I measured at the breaker terminals and not reading any voltage at all. There's 2 other 240v breakers in the panel measuring 250v but have absolutely nothing on this breaker. Wish I would of just measured that from the start lol. Probably time to upgrade this service panel. Thanks for all the help guys, cheers.

What you were probably measuring then, was the 120v from one leg going through the switch, through the motor, and then back to the L2 terminal.

A clue was measuring 122v from L1 > Neutral and L2 > Neutral. I would call it unusual, although not impossible, for both legs to have exactly the same voltage.

Each leg on the breaker was measuring 120v to ground on the panel. Measuring between both terminals on breaker was reading nothing.

Sounds like your breakers are on the same side of the split 240VAC. Are these correct breakers in the correct positions in the panel?

Is it Stab-loc as in Federal Pacific? If so, is it a skinny two pole breaker? If the answer is yes the breaker is probably in the wrong position. Move it up or down by 1/2 a space.

Stab-lok, dude you are the best! Moved it over and now we got the power! Guess I didn't take position into consideration. This is an old federal pioneer sub panel. Thanks folks

Aww federal pioneer electric stab loks didnt have the same issues as the US version (federal pacific electric)
