Hey guys,

I just bought a new lincoln powermig 256 to start doing some fabrication jobs out of my parents house to make some extra cash. They have a detached 50'x30' shop that I do all my hot rodding out of. Well my dad is concerned that we won't have enough power to run both my welder and their 5th wheel. Lincoln is calling for a 60 amp breaker but says full amp draw is 53 amps, they have their 5th wheel running on 30 amps now.

I'm under the impression that the 53 amps is full power while pulling full power off the 115v aux power too? So I'm assuming that the welder by itself won't ever pull the 53 amps with just me working out there right? Idk what kinda of power he has run out there now but I can ask. But would we have any problems using this welder while also having the 5th wheel on the same box as long as I don't try and weld at full tilt?

Thanks
Kody

I am not sure what you mean by "running from the same box". If you mean actually somehow using the same outlet than yes you will have problems especially since they are now 30 Amp limited, and may well have critical appliances such as refrigerator, etc.

If you mean from the same panel mounted in the garage, than that depends on the feed to the garage. If the garage has a 100 Amp service, I would expect no problem. Just put in a separate breaker and size the circuit for your welder. Using the welder at full tilt more than likely will not occur often, and is duty cycle limited.

Very nice welder by the way. Do you have the spool gun too?

Justsam; sorry I meant the same panel. And thanks I'm ready to start using it, and no I plan on buying a dynasty 200 for all my aluminum welding.

Sberry; it's 56/52 amps on 208/230 at 250 rated output.

The question is what's in the panel? How's it fed? What's going on in the 5th wheel? Someone living there and using power? You don't provide any details and ask if you can do something.

Probably not.

As has been said, u need to figure out what the ampacity of the garage panel is. If this is a residence, then u most likely have 120v/240v and so the max your welder would pull is ~50a.

U also need to figure out how much juice the 5th wheel is using as well as any other appliances or tools that will be running at the same time as the welder...

Sorry for the lack of info, I didn't wire anything out there so I just don't have the info.

I know the 5th wheel is on a 30 amp breaker, and the only other thing that really pulls any real power is our compressor but it won't be running much.

You can run 100 welders and 100 RVs from the same 60A box, if you only run one of them at a time. How stuff is being used is something only you can answer.

Welding is usually a very intermittent load, so unless the RV is drawing heavy curren tall the time you should be okay.

He never said he had 60 amps to the garage. I'll bet he is asking if he can patch into the RV circuit and do some welding. The answer is yes until he cranks it up and runs a lot of beads. And MIGs don't like to be starved.

But nothing he is about to do will be to code.
