Hi guys, I've just recently gotten a quote for two single bay wood garage doors (required by architecture guidelines) and the company gave me two quotes, one for Sapele (I'm familiar with) and Hemlock. The hemlock quote is literally half as expensive.
I've never used hemlock for anything. From what I've researched it's substantially softer than cedar, with a janka of 500. I'm not really concerned about the softness, but the stability. It needs to be able to withstand a southern coastal summer. It will be painted and I plan to keep it painted.
