Been on the lookout for a cheap 1/2 ratchet adaptor, and picked this up for $15, not a you **** price but I didn't have any Herbrand tools. Plus I also like how it works, low profile with no switches.

Seems very sturdily built. Has some chrome chip on the male drive, otherwise looks little used. I cleaned about 2 quarts of what appeared to be fossilized white lithium grease out of the mechanism, now it works great.

^ I've seen quite a few of those listed on Ebay in Herbrand, but couldn't figure out exactly what they were for or how they worked.
so.... how does that gizmo work, exactly?

You can add ratcheting action to any drive tool, namely flex head and t-handle breaker bars. The Herbrand has a 20t action, so it's on the coarse side of life, but it's built like a tank.

The knurled ring closest to the female drive you twist left or right to change direction.

I bought the same one, for about the same price, in the same condition on ebay. Hardly used. I've already used mine a couple of times. It's handy with my fixed Torquometer torque wrench, and with a breaker bar. I think it's equal to the quality of the Snap On unit even though the chrome might not be quite as shiny.

I figure mine was made 1962 or earlier.
