Here we go again - Air Lines!

Thought I would share some pictures from a friends machine shop. This is the aftermath from yesterday - around 150psi. No one around the lines when they blew (thankfully) so they were not subject to getting bumped or knocked around - just decided to let loose

II know this comes up all the time on this site and many others - but this is the reason I would never use PVC for air lines!

Just to clarify, it does not matter, PVC is NEVER rated for air, only liquid pressure.

I recently bought a used compressor from a guy on cl. I went to check it out and he kicked it on and ran it up to kickoff. 175psi. I looked around and his whole shop air system was plumbed with pvc. I told him I was stepping outside. Holler when he gets it bled down to 0 and I would come back in and discuss the compressor. He just laughed.

I know of a machine shop that had one blow last saturday. Ill see if the bits are still laying around tomorrow and snap a few pictures.

As many times as OSHA has been in there I dont know how they are not shut down

The thing about PVC & CPVC is after time it gets brittle . It's flexible when first put in but give it some time and under the right situations it will blow apart .

The issue with PVC is its ductility - it shatters when it breaks, and it doesn't matter if it's old or new.

I am still working on my pex lines for my garage so far this is what I have done. Much safer than pvc which I had for 20 years with no problem but did not want to take the chance and now that we have moved into a new house and garage figure I would do it right this time. I am still working on this project will post more pictures when done.

The added mass of Sch 80 will embed further into your bowels when they let lose Rate of speed is irrelevant.

My vote is: going the distance.

Not to debate what to plumb air lines out of, some of them in my shop have been there for 35 yrs, ( black pipe ) what I don't see is why you would have your pressure over 120-125 lbs.

PEX does not explode into pieces of shrapnel, so it is a much better choice. It is still not perfect, but it is much better than PVC.

All the air lines for the brakes on my trucks are essentially PEX with push connect fittings too.
