Here's my 2-car "shop"

Okay GJ'ers, here's my 2-car garage.

On the left side, there's my workbench space and toolbox. The right side is all of my shop tools. The center is the "bay" which I can pull my Oldsmobile out and bring cars in to work on them. And of course let's not forget the beer fridge in the corner!

I want to build a welding table real soon and place it on the left side by the garage entrance. Also I want to add two 240V circuits: one for a larger IR 60-gallon 3Hp compressor and a receptacle for my future Lincoln tombstone stick welder.

You can't see it here, but I have a 1/2" air line plumbed to the workbench area.

Yes, this is where I spend much of my time!

nice workspace!! tombstone stick welders are great, but if you want to do stickwelding, spend the extra money for a dc capable welder, better yet, get a smaller lincoln mig welder, I have a 300amp ac/ 250amp dc-/dc+ idealarc lincoln that I got on ebay for 300 bucks, and I have a little lincoln 140hd 120v mig welder for anything I can't do with the stick, put up some more pics if you got em!

Ok, here's some more pics!


In this space is my HF workbench for "clean" work, layouts, eating, etc. That's there's a chopsaw I bought and making an angle iron tray for to mount to the HF universal stand I bought. The space there will have my welding table as soon as I make it.

Here is my other workbench for general work, teardown, cutting, etc. You can see the angle iron tray I'm making for the chop saw. Notice the plumbed air station.

My toolbox.

Other side of the garage now. There's my 5-gallon solvent tank, my Porter-Cable drill press and bench grinder. My HF welder is there on the floor since I was doing some welding earlier that day. There's also the swtich panel for the outlets I added.

There's my wire wheel/buffer, shop vac and air compressor.

My air compressor plumbing and hose reel. Air line is going up and across the garage.

And last but definitely not least, the essential beer fridge! I put in the temp probe from my DVOM and set it at 36°F, the temp right before beer turns to slush!

@raley: I have two 4' dual T10 shop fluorescent lights on either side of my garage, and one 8' dual-bulb fluorescent fixture mounted on the beam running across my garage towards the back. All fixtures I bought at Lowe's.

Thanks! My next project is a 1961 GMC pickup that's at my parent's house. Need to make room for it. My only Chevy is my '05 Colorado. Right now it is in the driveway on jackstands, since I had to order new rotors. I'll be finishing the brake job this friday with a hangover!

I bought it at the Pomona car swap meet from a vendor. I also see them on Amazon all the time. Just do a search for "assholes garage sign". Taking the last beer in my fridge or snooping in my toolbox is a surefire way to turn me into an *******.

I'm an engineer too, and also pride myself on VERY cold beer. I've got my '47 Frigidaire set to "just before slushy". I'm going to get overly nerdy here - the temp readings are very dependent on WHERE you read the temp. I read mine up near the evaporator - it's colder there at 32F. It's probably more like 35 or 36F down at the bottom... Just so you guys know if you set it to 36F and are reading temp near the evaporator, you should try going colder! Experiment...

You just opened a can of worms, my fellow engineer! BTW, are you mechanical like me?

I placed the tip of my thermocouple in the area where the cans normally sit, and held it in place with masking tape. I closed the door, let it stabilize and played with the temp control. Any colder than 36°F and my fridge runs continuously. I felt like grabbing my old Heat Transfer book and doing some caluculations based on the ambient garage temp and the fridge interior temp to calculate the heat tansfer coefficient of the fridge insulation. But my book was at work...

My wife has to put up with me explaining how stuff works. I call it going into "Sheldon Mode" (from Big Bang Theory). The worst time was when she asked me how her brakes work, when she came out to my garage when I was doing a brake job on her car. I had her in my garage for over an hour, and I was using my dry erase marker board for a lecture.

That's classic! My wife calls me Sheldon occasionally. I'm an aircraft mechanic and I go into deep/long explanations sometimes when she asks me questions about how things work. Now she usually avoids the garage as much as possible.

If yours runs continuously when set to any lower than 36F, you might be in need of a recharge... Mine will freeze the nads off an eskimo.

Actually, now that I think about it, mine reads 30 up near the evaporator. I just kept tweaking the thermostat until the beer just started to freeze, then backed it off a bit. Technically, anything higher than 32F shouldn't freeze it, so 32.1F would be the optimal setting (and assuming ambient temps don't muck with the temps inside the unit, which they likely do as you pointed out).

I just found a piece of paper from me trying to explain to the wife a few weeks back how a four point kinematic mount works using cruciform, blade and post flexures (she's an aerospace engineer).

I bought the fridge off of craigslist for $40, so yeah maybe some refridgerant may have leaked out, oh well. My beer is cold, so that's all that matters!

My dad was also an aircraft mechanic (AH-64 Apache) and when I was still living at home, my mom had to hear it from both my dad and me!
