Thanks boosted :D

Spent some time in the garage tonight doing some painting on the air cleaner for our club Commer van, inspired by Ed Roth style monsters. Next step will be black outlines to finish it off.

Re: Hewey's 30sqm (322sqft) 'do everything double' garage

Frank it'll be ready for next weekend

Spent the last two days of the work week in North Sydney doing training for some design software (Indesign), so I can prepare documents for work. No one else showed up so I was the only one in the class. Trainer was a surfer, so used surf mags to show different real world examples of how different techniques might be used. ;)

So glad I don't have to do this every day! :willy_nil I actually caught the train in, but crossed the Highway and it was packed. That's the approach to the Harbour Bridge, which is hidden just around the corner.
2_zpsjkrdrwdg.jpg

To be fair, the view from the 10th floor in North Sydney is pretty nice.
1_zps0mzouhnm.jpg

And today I picked up a toolbox from Masters closing down sale, 10% off. Fits nicely on some steel shelves I'd picked up previously off the side of the road :rocker: Means I can finally sort my tools, and will be a massive help in tidying the garage up and functionality.

Will do Hotfr8! :D

Today the missus and I went along to the Museum Discovery Centre in Castle Hill. This is basically the storeroom for the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Australian Museum, and Sydney Living Museums - for all of the things not currently on exhibition. This weekend is their open weekend where they open the doors for people to have a peak - we didn't even see inside a third of the sheds and the collection we saw was overwhelming.

A Meccano club was there. This model is a scale model of the steam powered butter churner from the Nimbin Butter Factory and was running. The stairs at the front of the model give some idea of the scale.

And this was in the Centre's collection
IMG_6895_zpsoiwuspsk.jpg

Into the proper collection areas now. Row after row of genuine designer mid-century chairs! To give you an idea, a mint condition Featherstone lounge chair can go for up to $5K by itself! :willy_nil

This section dealt with architecture and building design features. The models show a number of buildings in Sydney.

And model cars

IMG_6933_zpsuhfb0zlo.jpg

IMG_6932_zpsn5h7nxgx.jpg

IMG_6934_zpsimnyqq7o.jpg

And somewhere to fill them up
IMG_6930_zpseduquar2.jpg

And this was a separate building - row after row of vintage cars. As you can see this is straight storage, this isn't a display area. Unfortuneately we were only allowed into a limited area, so couldn't get up close to many of these. No, I have no idea how the blue van snuck in there!
IMG_6949_zpsanvctrav.jpg

IMG_6946_zpsgrzzkvhr.jpg

And there's so much to take in, in this photo. The P76 sedan, and what appeared to be some kind of prototype timber buck behind it. The speedway bike, the pace bike for a velodrome, the orangey cyclecar, timber surfboat etc. And that's just what you can see from this angle.

Thanks Hewey that looks awesome, definitely going to have to check it out.

Also need to get cracking to get my dads humpy back to looking that good (FJ Special). We need to finish the few body repairs and start the slow track of putting it back together.

Re: Hewey's 30sqm (322sqft) 'do everything double' garage

Thanks guys. It was actually the re-opening technically. This news article explains it all and how you can visit. :D
http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/ne...s/news-story/6696a177f1d8ee70b3623d196fa3edc2

Grumblebum you need to get that FJ back on the road!

So today we visited Camden Park, which is a stones throw away from Lyndon's place. The property was built by John Macarthur, and was finished circa 1835. John died before the property was completed, however his family inherited it and it is still in the same family today - it's the oldest home in Australia to be still owned by the same family. Of the kids who inherited it, one son was a gardener who collected specimens from across the world. The other kid married, had kids, and its still in their bloodline. John Macarthur is an interesting figure, he did some amazing things like starting the wool industry, but was also very controversial, participating in things like the Rum Rebellion against Governor Bligh (yup the same bloke who had a mutiny on the Bounty against him).

So the reason we were interested in this place is my wife works as a guide at Elizabeth Farm in Parramatta. E-Farm was John and Elizabeth Macarthur's house before they started building Camden Park. Camden Park is still the family home, so is only open once a year to the public. Every year in the past she's been working at E-Farm, so was never able to make it!

The driveway has a nice view
18_zpslg9kdbke.jpg

A local historical military vehicle club had some neat gear on display. John and many of his heirs were in the military so there is a tangible link. I was just happy to check them out.
2_zpstr0q0c4c.jpg

3_zps0pcmt4zf.jpg

And the house itself. This is technically the rear, but as you can see with the carriage loop it was the side that visitors came to first.

Re: Hewey's 30sqm (322sqft) 'do everything double' garage

So the house was open for you to walk through a set course, with a person in each room to talk about the features. It's still a private home, so we only saw a selection of the rooms and we weren't allowed to take any photos. Needless to say, the grandeur and workmanship throughout was amazing. As was the size of the cellar!

I did get a bunch of pics of the garden though. Now remember one of John's son collected specimens from across the world and brought them back home to propagate. The end result is an amazing garden with massive mature trees, exotic plants, some ruins, and a good balance of being formal but not too manicured. Just like an old farmhouse garden really.

This brickwork is the ruins of an old glasshouse. They've recently discovered a pair of massive stoves, which were used to heat up hot water and pipe it through the greenhouse so they could grow tropical plants. Now when you think of the era, this is a pretty crazy set up for a private garden!
7_zps2lcleyew.jpg

5_zps5r41h42p.jpg

And these are the old stoves that were used to heat up the water. The steps at the right give some idea of the scale - just a little larger than old kookaburra home stove.
12_zps0vjp5owa.jpg

This shed was a modern addition, but I loved the style of it.
4_zpsqm2n4ky1.jpg

Some general shots. It has the kind of depth that only an old garden can seem to achieve. Perfectly imperfect I reckon
9_zpstknrkfak.jpg

10_zpsr47bvjek.jpg

6_zpsgzejsvlr.jpg

Some of the effects created over the pathways was awesome. It would be a great cool space in Summer.
15_zps6xgrzvpw.jpg

16_zpshorc9dss.jpg

Nice hedge!
17_zpsmqoijynv.jpg

More exotic flowers. The garden is still based on the cuttings produced by John's son. Yes these probably were brought to Australia in a sailing ship! No ducking down to Bunnings in those days!
11_zpsa6bmcxio.jpg

14_zpsurrat7eo.jpg

And the stables, another great old shed
13_zpshk8ij67x.jpg

Well that's it for the weekend, was pretty good I reckon

Hewey

You maniac! Why didn't you get in touch if you were out here today????

I love the Camden Park Estate buildings. I did an architectural study on that, and the 2 "Elizabeth Macarthur" buildings at Menangle when I was at Uni. As you say, John had long gone, from dementia, when his bride, Elizabeth, finished all his outstanding projects, including "Gilbulla", between Menangle and Douglas Park on the back road (Moreton Park Road). I used to mow the lawns at Gilbulla from when I got my licence in 1976 till about 1979.

And I'm trying to find a picture now of when I organised a Rolls Royce Owner's Club run to Camden Park House in about 2006.... But it is alluding me. :headscrat :headscrat

Re: Hewey's 30sqm (322sqft) 'do everything double' garage

Thanks for stopping by Sean

Today I met Grumblebum and Lyndon. Nice guys and lovely wives as well, going to have to do that again

One of the things that came up in conversation was Motorex, which is one of the biggest indoor car shows for Street Machines and Hot Rods in Australia. It now alternates between Sydney and Melbourne, but when it's held in Sydney there's usually a cruise at the end of into the city. I'd thought I'd share some of my pics.

So the 2011 post show cruise. I was riding along in my mate Telf's EJ Holden

Re: Hewey's 30sqm (322sqft) 'do everything double' garage

Thanks guys  Hotfr8, that first batch of pics was 2011, the second (in the rain) were 2012.

So it's been a good long weekend here. Last weekend when we were meeting up with Grumblebum and Lyndon, a guy on Instagram alerted me to a great deal on a cruiser bike on gumtree, up in the Blue Mountains. It ended up following me home, too good a deal to pass up really :willy_nil I had one of these a few years ago, but sold it to a mate.

The bike is a Dyno 'Taboo Tiki'. Dyno were an arm of GT bikes who did BMXs, and they branched out into some great beach cruisers in the late 90s. Since then Schwinn bought GT, and sold off the Dyno brand since they had their own cruisers. This particular model was designed by lowbrow & hot rod artist Von Franco.

This is the original pic from their awesome calendar of their different models
534466-VonFrancoTikiBike_large.jpg

And the bike I picked up. She's in okay nic, barely ridden, but the left hand side has some damage from thoughtless storage
1_zpsqjevrhe5.jpg

Speaking of tiki stuff, I finally got around to unpacking and sorting our tiki mug cabinet. I'll share a few more pics of this room as we get it a little more sorted out in the near future. My wife and I actually met on the forum Tiki Central. She lived interstate at the time, but then a mate was having a tiki themed party in Queensland so I used it as an excuse to go meet her. The rest as they say is history
2_zpsvs1393wa.jpg

So yesterday we headed out for a drive, with no real plan in place about where we might end up. We ended up doing a 500km (310 miles) loop! Headed up the mountains and stopped in a few antique shops. One of them was closing down and shedding stock, and when we expressed an interest in this vintage tourist photo book, the owner gave it to us  I just love the font on the front.
8_zpsoj0cuj6i.jpg

We headed west and ended up going down to Jenolan Caves for kicks. Except we're idiots, and didn't consider it was perfect weather, the middle of a long weekend, and the middle of school holidays. I dropped off the missus so she could use the loo, but didn't actually stop because there was no parking :lol_hitti

On the other side we saw a signpost to Goulburn, so figured what the heck, lets go there. This was a neat little cottage garden we passed
3_zpsa55alnza.jpg

We love checking out the buildings in these little country towns, as lots of them have survived without being butchered too much in the name of 'progress'. This is the old fire station in Crookwell, which is currently for sale. One day I'd love to do a residential conversion of a place like this.
5_zpszhgxfml7.jpg

The Holden mechanics (that's the Aussie arm of General Motors)
4_zpsyn9ddrl5.jpg

And the swimming pool
6_zpslyihqyot.jpg

We cruised on to Goulburn, and had some pizza in the park for an early dinner. Goulburn is a little underated I reckon, it's actually a pretty nice little town. Just freezing in winter!
7_zpsdeiuoi59.jpg

And then on the way home we grabbed some dessert at Lickits in Narrellan, which isn't far from Lyndon's place. They do frozen custard, which is somewhere between the consistency of soft serve and regular ice cream. Yum!

Today was just a quiet one at home. I got out for a mountain bike ride while the missus had breaky at a nice cafe. Then we washed both our cars, then I washed the mud off the driveway from yesterday's drive  Rearranged the garage and did some tidying up, and mounted my vice.

Thanks 1/2 Cup. ;)

Got a few days off with the wife, taking it easy and catching up on a few things we've been meaning to do for a while. Met with the bank today to talk home loans, and work out where we're at and where we want to be. Still got a 6 month rental lease, but just good to work out how we're tracking. Did the weekly shop and some house cleaning. Also got in and fixed my whipper snipper (edger, weed whacker, whirly wheel of weed death :willy_nil ) which wouldn't start. New fuel lines, fuel filter, spark plug, air filter, priming bulb. Got it to start and idle, but still wouldn't rev. Did some googling, then pulled apart the carb and gave it a clean - success! Did the front lawn, ran out of light before I could do the back as well. I wouldn't say the edges are that even you need a vernier caliper to measure, but certainly a lot tidier than they were

Re: Hewey's 30sqm (322sqft) 'do everything double' garage

So we've been busy. First inspection of the house we're renting went well, and I got approval to fix the side gate latch myself, so happy all round :D

Yesterday we went for a drive down to Wombeyan Caves. I've passed the sign a few times, so figured may as well find out where it was and give the Subaru some time on the dirt.

This is the trail in. This tunnel is big enough for a single car, and carved from solid sandstone
1_zpsmr5csga8.jpg

And a couple of pics from the road
2_zpsyyzcdwcm.jpg

3_zpsandomznk.jpg

The Wollondilly River had a good flow to it. Along the banks in the other direction was a great looking grassy campspot, going to have to get back there one day I reckon.
4_zpsolojy9de.jpg

Wombeyan Caves. There's a large central cavern which you can walk through on your own, as well as a locked cave they take tours through. We just checked out the open cavern.
5_zpsuatw4wyr.jpg

6_zpsadelvzwn.jpg

7_zpsf4jfoune.jpg

Today we took my wife's Mazda for a spin in search of some flowing twisty roads :3gears: She's a coffee fiend, so first step was Picton at one of the cafes she loves. In 5 minutes waiting in the car I spied a tough XW GT, Jag, LC Torana, and a Mk1 Cortina. I managed to get a pic of the Jag.
8_zpsfuxwf2jx.jpg

From there we headed across to the coast and down to Kiama, then hooked inland and through Jamberoo and Robertson and some back roads back to Bowral where we grabbed some lunch. They were just about to close so we scored some freebies (sausage roll, extra pieces of cake) :D
9_zps9lijwpdc.jpg

And enjoying the flowing road of the Old Hume Highway instead of the boring freeway above

Thanks for showing the great pics. How big is that tunnel? My ute and camper is 3.4mm high and 2.5m wide, do you think I will fit thru? We have been trying to get up there for about 12 months now, but work and building the house has put the run on hold. Again great pics.

Re: Hewey's 30sqm (322sqft) 'do everything double' garage

Thanks guys

Grumblebum and Terrick there's two camping sites. One is a private one on the Wollondilly River, the other the NPWS one at the caves themselves. We reckon the private one was in a nicer location and less likely to be crowded, but the toilets and showers weren't walking distance from where we'd want to camp, and about 20 minute drive from the caves. The NPWS campsite had more convenient showers, toilets and camp kitchens etc. but feels like it could get more packed at peak times.

Terrick not sure of the dimensions, but the pics I googled below give you some idea of the scale, you should be fine . The Southern Highlands approach to the Caves was pretty rough in places and had some tight bits, particularly corners. It's a much easier route coming from the Taralga side.

Hewey

Great pics.

And yes the run in from Taralga is a much better road, but still 15 kilometres of dirt (it's in my thread somewhere......

Next time you go out for a run (and if you stay on the tar) give me a call and we'll join you in the XJR.

Re: Hewey's 30sqm (322sqft) 'do everything double' garage

So this weekend I headed out past Orange to give a mate a hand building his straw build house. He's on about 5 acres next to a stream, packed in to a tiny shed with a wife and 3 kids while they build their dream home.

Another mate and I drove out on Friday night. We set up our sleeping bags in the dark on the stack of haybales in the open house. I took this pic while still in the sleeping bag the next morning.

And an overall shot of the whole house. We'd be working on the corner at the front left where the tarp is.

All of the main frame was built off site and assembled on site. All of the joins were cut into the timber when they were made. Beautiful joinery work. The timber is Canadian Cypress, and was milled specifically to order. A lot of the timber will stay on display in the finished interior.

The view from the main bedroom. It'll feature a Japanese style tub and full length windows over the view.

This gives you an idea of the depth of the door frames.

And adding a lime based render. There'll be another 3 or so coats over this one so the finish wasn't too critical. The hard was getting it to stick to the hay. The lime render breathes, so lets moisture in and out of the strawbale as the weather changes.

Back home now relaxing on the couch. Think I'll sleep well tonight
