I saw on our news that there ere people that had waited to long to evacuate and had to hunker down in place. They said Canada is sending crews over to help fight the fire so it must be quite bad. Stay safe.

Thanks Guster and Lotusnut. Yeh the fires in some places flared up with little to no notice. We've had a few days of cool weather so they have been busy doing back burning to try and head it off before it reaches homes. Later this week its back up to 41c (105f), so the fires will ramp up again.

So the good bit first. Christmas was good, the weather cooled down and the smoke cleared. Caught up with the family, ate good food etc. The mother in law and brother in law stayed with us for 4 days which was nice, but unfortunately most of the local tourist spots like lookouts weren't great given all the smoke!

On the garage front I did alright, I got a canvas bag (this will be a tool bag for the Mini for roadside fixes), workshop manual, socket set and ratchet spanners

The fires continue to be an ongoing stress. My mum and step dad have evacuated their town of Bright in Victoria and are far away and safe. Their house isn't high risk in terms of location and vegetation, but there's also risks like blackouts, no food or supplies coming in to town etc. and there's only one road out of town that doesnt involve crossing mountains covered in bush, and that's only one lane each way and still prone to getting cut.

We had a warning that the fire near us was going to flare up on New Years Eve which didn't eventuate, but is threatening to flare up once again tomorrow and the fire prediction maps show it coming within a few kms of our place. Bags are packed, and we're ready to hit the road should we need to, dogs and mini in tow. House is insured and at the end of the day can be rebuilt, us not so much. An extended family member lost their home of 40 years in Batemans Bay a few days back. It really hits home when its someone you know on the news talking about losing their home. :(

And back to work on Monday! :wtf:

Stay safe Hewey.

Our neighbours just got back from camping near Eden. They were evacuated to the footy ground in Eden on NYE and had to come home via Canberra and the Hume as the Princes Hwy is closed and likely to be for weeks. Another friend who lives at Bermagui has evacuated to Narooma and expects her house to be under threat this weekend. Its been smoky and hazy here in Melbourne for days from these fires.

Nice Christmas haul mate. Happy new year and praying you guys get some rain too. Stay safe out there.

We had a very ominous reminder of what you guys are going through and we are 2500km away. This was around 3pm taken from the back deck yesterday. :eyecrazy:

Thanks Geoff, Hotfr8 and Guster

Went back to work last week, had some terrible days - so straight back in to it! :wtf: We had two fires pop up since last Sunday's thunderstorm in our 10km watch zone, thankfully they got on to them straight away. Since the cool change came through we've had drizzle which is great, and feels like they've finally got a chance to get on top of everything.

Went to a local show in the mini last night, took this pic on the way

Hi mate, just catching up. Mini looks cool. My dad used to have one like that many years ago but it was yellow.

Cool today but very smokey down here, felt like it should have been raining but it wasn't to be.

Cheers GB

Rudi the show was a night time show at the Penrith Homemaker Mega Centre. Don't even know the name of it or who organises it, tagged along with a mate who'd been before  Didnt take many pics to be honest, but posted a handful on insta https://www.instagram.com/p/B7LW4CAAow6/

Hey! that's not far from me!

Actually, I usually go with the wife shopping there or at the Westfields, And it might have been a few weeks ago, we were heading home, and saw a heap of muscle cars cruising up and down Mulgoa Road. So that's where they are headed!

The only car show I would usually go to was in my Old stomping grounds near Fairfield, In Wetherill Park. They had "cars under the stars" on once a month, for anything pre 90's.

They have really good food open there too in all the trailer food stalls.

Ask your mate what car show it was, maybe I'll check it out next time you go too!

Rudi.

Hey Rudi and Cinemod, the Homemaker show appears to be the Sundown Car Fest, it's held monthly, next dates are 8 Feb and 14 March. https://www.penrithhomemakercentre.com.au/event/sundown-car-fest/

The other regular to keep an eye out for is the Sydney Cars and Coffee held at Luddenham. The next one is Feb 9, they're raising money for the RFS so should be a big one.

Sunday was the Minis in the Gong show, our first Mini show. Some neat cars on display. We then ventured further south to Berry for lunch. Estimate we did about 400km over the course of the day, the mini went great the entire trip

Hotfr8 mob is a great term, particularly since the mini K model featured a Kangaroo :)

Yesterday we braved the wet and headed down to Wollongong for a facebook marketplace buy. Took the scenic route home via Kangaroo Valley and explored some back roads along the way.

Speaking of rain we've had a LOT, 71mm so far Sunday, 71mm Saturday, and 48mm Friday. The strip drain I installed in the driveway is doing a great job, and no flooding has made it in to the garage. :bounce: These pics don't do it justice, but you can just make out the sheet flow coming down the driveway, and very little making it past the drain.

To rephrase that did you hit a Mob of Minis with your Kangaroo......Sorry A mob of Roos as we say does relate well to a Mob of Minis. Only an Aussie would understand all that.

I know that section of road in the last pic. We take my Dually and 8meter trailer that way to pic up supplies at Nowra. It really is a great place to visit. The Kangaroo Valley Van park is nice too.

Looks exactly like the army surplus backpacks just about everyone at my school in the UK used.
They were WWII army issue & the local army surplus store must have sold a few thousand of them over the years.

Glad to see the drainage working. You guys had a shocking amount of rain and looks like there might be a little more on the way with the tail of that cyclone tracking pretty close. It's meant to miss you but these things are fickle! Last I hope you got rain water tanks and that they are full up.

And on the weekend I added silastic to the foam expansion joints of the driveway drain, and extended the pipe outlet and buried the pipe to tidy things up.

Thanks Ken

Picked up some 10" mini mags. These are Amos brand, made in Brisbane. Great to have some local period mags as a nice change to all the Euro ones. Need centre caps and nuts, for now they'll just go in to storage.
https://scontent-syd2-1.**.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/p1080x2048/89256489_1056466548061724_2914720619889164288_n.jpg?_nc_cat=106&_nc_sid=b96e70&_nc_ohc=NEAiG4egKnAAX_hRvtT&_nc_ht=scontent-syd2-1.**&_nc_tp=6&oh=ddfd64498f0bf06f97017da79701ed60&oe=5E93FFE2

And have made a start on house painting! We're using Porters Mineral Paint, it petrifies and bonds to the brick and comes with a 25 year guarantee. We wanted the look of a limewashed brick cottage but with better longevity. Am painting the house in sections, this gives a good perspective in to how much it is brightening up the house.

Those wheels are a great find Hewey. Jeff Amos hasn't made any wheels since the '70's and they are very hard to get.

Thanks Anth. The colour scheme was planned back mid last year when we got the red paint for the door, it's great to see it finally coming together. Geoff and Hotfr8 yes the Amos mags are cool and I'm looking forward to tidying them up.

Have finished painting the brick on the front, makes a heck of a difference! Still lots of details to tidy up, and 3 more sides to go!

Thanks ajohno and Mike. Grumblebum, we're going to look at a few options with the roof. The timber bargeboards need some attention (which is one of the things we were alerted to with our house inspection), and the tiles need repointing too. The discolouration you see is mainly from lichen growth on the roof, so it needs a good clean. Once we do all that, we may as well get some quotes on replacing the roof and doing it all properly. But we certainly dont have an unlimited bucket of funds, so it's a case of picking what we need, what we want, and where we draw the line. :headscrat

Sunday was a good day. Went up to the local cars and coffee, with no particular plan after that. Headed out west to Oberon, and then up to Bathurst. Great country roads and cool weather made it perfect for mini driving!. Of course at Bathurst we had to take turns doing a lap each

How annoying is it be have to keep it to 60 kph around Bathurst? Mind you, Skyline and some other points are pretty scary even at that speed.

House is looking great!

House looks great Hewey! Cleaning the the roof tiles is a great time to give it some paint too. Dying to do mine!

Great photo! Must be a fun drive even if the poor mini doesn't quite fill the spot on the grid.

Geoff yeh Skyline through to Forest Elbow is pretty eye opening piece of track :shocking: Thanks mate.

Thanks Guster, more fun to drive on some of the quiet country back roads on the way home

Painting is going well. The driveway end of the house has been finished, other end of the house has first coat. Was hoping to finish it today but the humidity was too high. It came up that my neighbour was after some fill for one of his projects, so I decided to break up the concrete pathway from the end of our front porch, one arm goes down the side of the house and the other to the front fence. This pathway has bugged me since we moved in, so was great to smash it up. I was breaking it up by hand when the neighbour dropped off his jackhammer - legend!

Thanks Ken. The pathway that went out to the front fence will be topped up with dirt and grassed over. The timber front deck will be extended to make it wider across the front of the house. And we're looking at a gravel path with recycled brick edging from the door to the front gate, and just around the corner of the house for a place to store our bins.

Sparky has been and installed our barnlight, made in Melbourne under license using American designs.

And realised I hadn't posted a pic showing the tidied up drain. The pipe outlets are next to each other, with sandstone directly under them to help prevent scouring out. I've then backfilled on top of them and used some more sandstone, mostly to help hide the pipe but also so I dont accidentally drive over it.

House is looking great Hewey. Barn light adds a nice touch.

Even better to see the water going where it is meant to go. That is, not into the shed anymore.
