Hex and Torx socket storage

I am looking to clean up my hex and torx socket storage. I really like the Snap-on idea. Any other ideas or suggestions?

I made mine out off 3/4 inch press wood. I drill the size off the socket, for every socket a got... pretty simple, but you can choose the layout you want.

was thinking the same thing. At $2.50 for a 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 or 99 cents each at HF, how can that be beat?

I have that tray and don't like it or use it. If someone wants it, I'll gladly send it to them in a $5 flat rate USPS box. Some of my sockets wouldn't physically fit in it(depending on brand). I'll stick with my Mechanics Time Saver magnetic ones.

i dont know what type of box you have, however the cheap socket rails and some pop rivets will do wonders to keeping a rail in place. before i had a "nice" box, i would drill a hole in the drawer and pop rivet the rails down to make them stand upright. would allow me to sandwhich the universals and hex sockets in between the hansen rails in my drawer.

Socket rails from Harbor Freight $0.99. I bought the three pack with 1/4,3/8,1/2 for 2.49.

i bought multiple 3 packs i also have the HF hansen socket tray copy's but the metric ones skip a bunch of sizes so i might go to rails for all my metric stuff

Sometimes I like to take the whole rail out though, if I'm not sure what size I need.
How do you do that if it's riveted in?

You can't. But Snap-on make clips that hold the rails in. So you can rivet the clips, but still release the rail if you want to take the whole rail out.

I'm lucky the 99¢ store down the street has decent plastic rails for $1 each. or 2 packs of shorter versions for the same price. I usually pick up a few when i stop in.

One of the reasons I like the Ernst rails is that they have a keyhole slot in them. You can buy a mounting kit:

Or can screw them into a piece of plywood but leave them slightly loose. Tight enough for the one-handed socket grab but loose enough for removal of the whole rail.

I've got that tray and it's great. It didn't fit some Indestro I had but it works for SO stuff (I guess this is obvious )

I had wished it would take torx sockets below 27, but it only holds the Torx 55 through 27. And the hex from 3/8's down + metric hex.

It works for me though.

The way I calculate my off-work time, those precious hours I have to f*ck about or spend time with the family, I reckon I should be getting several hundred an hour
