Looking into purchasing an alignment/pry bar in the 42-46" range for automotive work. Is there any pros/cons for hex or round stock pry bars? Right now I'm considering a Mayhew 42" hex stock pry bar, Ajax 46" round stock pry bar or an OTC 46" Jimmy Bar (which looks identical to the Ajax offering).

Round, the old ironworkers said the hexagonal ones would bind when prying. This would be in a prying/rolling or prying/ nudging side to side actions. This might not pertain to you but I just like the round ones.

If you get a hex bar stuck in a hole doing alignments then you can get a wrench on it to twist it out. Just had to do that not 43 minutes ago.

Just thought I'd post photos...

Left---OTC Set...

Right---Mayhew Dominator set...

Either would be OK with me...

I have posted this before but if you want a good pry bar for suspension work and not a lot of money you can make one out of a torsion bar from a 4 door s-10 blazer, just cut the end to a point and pry away. These work better than a ''digging iron'' and will not bend out of shape when you hand on them.

I have a 36" hex shaft Armstrong pry bar. That thing will flex almost into a u shape. I wouldn't buy a hex shaft pry bar. Get the mayhew dominator pry bars. They come with the striking caps on them also. I love mine
