Started another vise stand this morning.
Ripped up some 12" pipe to get started.

Then tacked a jig up to hold and strike miter cuts.
I used a laser to mark the miters and then cut them with a hand torch.

Got 3 pairs of 2 segments tacked up and now can see a little of what it will look like.
Very productive day.
I'll probably cut 3" or 4" off the bottom before it's over.
Tomorrow, I should get the base welded out and hopefully get the column done as well.

Hey I like that!

I wouldn't cut any off. Maybe put a bottom on it and fill with sand or lead shot.

That looks really good Royce. Those layout lines running up the curved sections of pipe would be very difficult to get straight without the laser and not that easy with. Looks like you got a great fit. You must be saving those tapered sections ripped from the 12" pipe in your first post for the upright. It looks so good with even height of the curved sections in the base I would be reluctant to shorten either row except to even them up but I can see why you may need to. Very nice. Ed.

Ed,
If this was a simple saddle or miter, I would have developed a pattern.
But when dealing with ID'S and OD'S in the same piece, It gets kind of tricky.
I find it far faster to cast a laser line on it and a lot less trimulation.
Thank you

You are this months official NIFTY award winner... so few have won... so few will...

WOW, Not only did I win a award, a nifty award at that.
It makes me think of Tom Waits acceptance speech to the rock and roll hall of fame.
If you get a chance, watch the youtube vid of it, I think you will get a chuckle out of it.
I would link it if I knew how.
Thanks

Royce, what laser are you using? I am now officially in the market for buying one.

Strouty,
It is a dewalt that cast a vertical or horizontal line.
If I had to replace it, I would get the one that also casts perpendicular lines.
It's a little more money, but handier than a pocket on a shirt.

Thanks to all for the replies,
Got the column done today and the base welded out.
I'm thinking I'll mount two vises on it, opposite of each other
I'm also looking for some tubing that will telescope, so I can make the vises rotate.

Found some 6" sch 80 and some 5 sch 40 for the swivels.
Each vise will rotate on 2 axes.
Only had a couple hours to dedicate to this today, but managed to make a little headway.
Also found a sow's ear yesterday, I'm sure I can see a silk purse in there somewhere.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from Royce.---Really detailed work.

You need to put together a cook book of all your projects, and call it ("Projects I Just Cooked Up In My Head").

VA,
I just don't know.
Maybe, the quest for the better mouse trap.
But I do know I go to bed thinking about building things and wake up the same way.
Thanks

One of those previous projects... also won a NIFTY award. (Parts Bin Project)...

Actually... i need to research... The parts bin project may have been the first NIFTY award on the entire internet... this year... and now a second... impressive.

I'd hate to guess what a cabinet like that of that quality, would cost you retail.---But me, I wouldn't start a project like that for love nor money or two gold monkeys.---Cause it would never get finished and all the pieces would just be laying around in my way for years.---Very well done Sir.
