Hi guys,

I'm thinking of putting (3) of these hexagon lights in my 30x40 garage build, one for each bay.

First off, anyone have them? Are they awesome or garbage? If they arent bright enough i can always add some LED fixtures in between.

Second, wheres the cheapest ones, they all seem to be 8'x16' fixtures and cheapest i can find is $430/each on ebay.

As neat looking as those are, there ain't no way I would have them. What happens in three years when one fails and there are no replacements? I shy away from almost all the new "in" things for that very reason. Whenever my opinion is asked about lighting, the answer is always the same. Stick with proven, easy to repair or replace technology.

I've seen pictures online of those hexagon fixtures being used in automotive detail shops but it's unclear to me if there's a specific advantage over conventional strip lighting.

Maybe less shadows. I think they would look good in a showroom but I’m not interested in them for my plain jane shop. I would worry about breaking one piece, then it would look bad.

You didn't miss much

Dont chase the cheapest lighting. Doing work at height twice because they ****/failed blows.
unfortunately i have had great luck in my life chasing the absolute cheapest stuff, its never "paid off" for me to buy more expensive stuff since it usually all comes from the same place overseas.

I actually saw that post too, theres 2 replies so not much info on it, the link someone added doesnt exist either but i looked up the shop and they have the same lights for $200 more a piece than on ebay.

As for worrying about something breaking 3 years from now im not going to dwell on it. My compressor could also die, my harbor freight welder, or even the damn car lift. M y garage has an empty attic above so adding/replacing any wiring or lights is a breeze.

Does anybody actually have these lights who can comment on them?

they're all made by basically the same place in china anyways until you add a comma in the price tag. that link gets you 3 of them to your door for under 700.

Following - also interested to hear from any owners. I found these originally on some speciality garage sites but were far too expensive for what I'm looking for. @njk4o5 any luck finding any new info?

Edit - this is the best I've found so far outside of Alibaba: https://www.ebay.com/itm/194914283080 - when buying in sets of 3+, they are 417/each

no new info, but I'm going to be purchasing those ebay ones in the next few months once my garage is tight to the weather. Last week ebay had a special on them for $375/ea

Oh wow - I was messaging with the owner and he offered a code to buy right from the site for approx 417/each if buying 3, maybe he can do even a little better? Also no tax apparently when buying from his site directly. I'm also planning to buy 3 of them within the next month or so. I do wish they made a dimmable version as 3 of them will draw 1600+ watts and likely not all needed all the time. May look into wireless switches for the 3 bays/zones so that I can control them independently without having to run/pull new wires for all switches.

Guys - I bought 3 sets of the mentioned hex lights above and got them installed this past weekend. After a bit of trial and error installing them in different sized sections, we got them up. Man they are BRIGHT! I wound up putting each bay on a separate smart switch so I can control each individually. I had plenty of leftover pieces as I didn't install every hex and very little of the straight/rectangle pieces so will be creating some accent pieces here as well as under cabinet lighting and lighting along the beams for when I don't need full power.

I really like the uniqueness of them - yes they are definitely more work to place and set up, but already got a few stopping by to say wow! Some pics attached -

That's rad! All in total about 1k for the 3 bays in your garage?

1200 for the 3 bays including shipping, no tax charged. Most other sellers are 650/set or so and most look fairly identical.

Lessons learned - take your time putting them together, and definitely get some help in hanging them. When I attempted to hang an entire set all at once it did not go well as they flex quite a bit. Definitely easier to install in smaller sections IMO!

that looks awesome, I'm totally buying these for mine. My goal for my garage was to build it as cheap as possible but these lights look too dang good not to get.

I'm assuming that these don't come in completed assemblies and there are some sort of adapters to mate the things together?

I never understood why someone doesn't produce some 90* and 120* adaptors for Barrina T5s and simply cut out the middle man. The markup on these things are insane for what is effectively a cheap LED tube fixture.

Correct, all the tubes and connectors are separate. There are 57 x 17" light bars, 12 x 46" light bars, 1 T splicer, 8 straight through connectors, 3 90 degree/elbow connectors, 27 Y connectors, 17 V connectors, and 2 wiring pigtails. When you look at all the components included (over 70 light bars) the price isn't all too bad.

Probably not all that difficult to 3d print the connectors

@Gorill83 kind of unrelated is the connector that 3 lobe design? ive always wanted some right angle connectors for the Barrina lignts off amazon. I found a place to buy hexagon led connectors so im guessing they are the same, but if you had pics of the plug end of the light strip and the connectors that would help!

These connectors in particular are 2 prong with hot/neutral in there. Just took a couple pics, attached - I have also seen these in 3 prongs as well from other mfg's

Hey thanks for taking the time for that, yeah the Barrinas dont really use the ground pin for the linkable connector but the pins are horizontal instead of vertical. Ill keep shopping cause the place I found is in the UK so internationl shipping makes buying 3 connecters stupid expensive.

I've seen these in use, and basically anything shiny in the area gets covered in hexagons. I find this effect incredibly annoying, but maybe most people don't.

In much the same way, having neon artwork on the walls looks cool but gets distracting because anything shiny in the room is constantly reflecting flashes of color in your peripheral vision.

From what I have seen these are mostly for finding defects in paint jobs. (Dirt nibs/ hail dents)the multiple angles of lite help to run over different curves of a vehicle. Kind of like the lights Paintless dent guys use

I have really been looking into these lights because I like the look. After reading through some of the other posts I’m thinking I may go another route. The light output and coverage looks great but I feel for less money I could get similar coverage. While I feel (personal opinion) that they look good and have a purpose, it just doesn’t fit my need. If I did more auto detail work I could see these being a huge benefit. For a home garage, where I just want more lighting than the two keyless lights, I wouldn’t be using these for their intended purpose.

I have 3 of the 8'x16' modules in the shop portion of my new garage. I have them on 6 switches- one for each rectangular outline, and one for each hex inner piece.

Mine are mounted on a sloped ceiling that goes from about 11 to 19 feet high, and they are really bright when all are on- enough to do surgery!

I really like the look, and would do them again. They come with spare lengths, so if a couple break, I have extras.

That's a lot of switches. Do you find yourself using them enough that you'd do it that way again?

It's sort of like a poor man's dimmer. I just put on the ones I need at the time. I have enough natural light that during the day, I don't need all that light.

And contrary to what I assumed before I looked at the specs, even though they are LEDs, they really **** up the power. So judicious use makes sense for me.

Any updates on these? Has anyone else got them in the past year and a half? Just looking for something different in my newly built second garage.
