Hey everyone.

I have a standalone garage built maybe in the 1940's. It has Bi-fold doors that are in need of repair. More like rebuild. My search for the hardware landed me here. I hope to find the information on where to find replacement hardware and/or other ideas.

Thanks MrGee

Howdy. My best piece of advice is to leave while you still can. This place is very addicting. Unfortunately, I'm no help on the doors, but I can say that most of the folks here will want pics and you probably won't have to wait long to get an answer. Good luck.

I do plan on adding pictures. Just did not have any on hand when I joined. I have checked youtube and found the doors like I have but no hardware information.
I am sure I can rebuild the doors but I am concerned that I may need to replace some of the hardware.

Thanks

You will find several deals that you will not be able to resist by surfing these forum threads. I have far more tools in my collection thanks to the wonderful people here. Also learned a lot and got to play with my skills in a few projects inspired by the pages before you.

MrGee: what the members are trying to say is welcome to GJ and hang on to your wallet because your tool inventory will grow substancially.

i just replaced my 30 year old garage doors that had been beat up pretty bad raising 5 kids in my house. i'd probably replaced a broken spring on both of the single 7 x 9 doors maybe 8 times in the 30 years and thank God when the old springs broke nobody got hurt.

the new doors are great looking and insulated so the garage usually isn't colder than outside like the old days. it was well worth the investment if you can afford them or post up some pics and maybe we can help you fix yours if you can't find another door like yours in all the threads and posts.

have fun reading and learning and teach us what you know. any hobbies or past jobs you want to share your story about?

I have finally made it back with pictures.
I think I have an idea as how to build new doors but I am worried about needing to replace the hanger hardware. In the picture you can see one hanger looks okay if I can unthread the nut over years of paint. The other hanger already is built up with a lot of washers so I am thinking that bolt is already stripped and should be replaced. I have not been able to identify a manufacturer.

Bi-fold Doors are now 5/4 x 8" cross members and 5/4 x 6" upright members with 3/4 T&G as the backing. Each section is 47" wide and 90" high

The original plan was to use 2 x 8 and 2 x 6 with a sheet of plywood siding as the back. Not sure if using 2x's is the way to go due to weight. Maybe 5/4 decking instead with the plywood backing.

I am open to any and all ideas. Due to low ceiling and hanging fishing rods an overhead door is not an option.

If I should start a thread in another section let me know.

Thanks MrGee

I love those doors. I can't wait till they're fixed to see what they look like. Unfortunately, I'm still no help.

McGee; not many of us end up here to greet and help new members so since you have some pictures now how about starting your first thread in the Garage Gallery where all the garage guys tend to watch those threads. pick a good name that gets us to click on it. Maybe "Replacing my Vintage garage doors and need HELP" or something like that.

since a lot of us work with vintage tools some us might have some old square headed or interesting bolts to sell or trade you for something you have extra.

good luck and i'll probably be watching and try to help if I can.
