Hey, Hey.........It IS DONE!!!!! (new pixs start at post 136)

****FINISHED PHOTOS START AT POST #193****

Well, after finishing up alot of project in the house I am now able to start the garage. We had this home built about 2 years ago and Ive been planning it for awhile.

I researched the living **** out of metal cabinets (on here of course) and decided for me the best route was to get unfinished cabinets. My budget wouldnt allow for as many as I wanted in aluminum. I had quotes from 10-15 grand. :lol_hitti

Anyway, it looks like junk now but I will post progress as I move along. Ive got some cool ideas.........well to me at least.

I started mounting some wall cabinets on sunday. Will do more this week.

Got a bit more done. Installed most of the bottom cabinets going on this wall.

Also, started painting the concrete up-ledge.

Slow and steady........I dont have time to do it all at once. I will do some work at nights and also on the weekend.

Big plans though.

Looks lame now but it wont when its done.:bounce:

Are you building or buying your unfinished cabinets?

I was going to buy aluminum cabinets but my budget just wouldnt allow it. I looked at gladiator then because they WERE in my budget.

But after looking at them I decided to go with unfinished cabinets. I was going to buy them at lowes but then menards was having a 20% off sale.

I spent $920.00 for all the cabinets in my garage. Gladiators in a similiar layout would have been closer to $3000-$3500

Now I know these cabinets are no way near the quality of lista or baldhead but I just cant swing that. New house with a 1 year old son :) I just cant splurge on myself right now.

So, I do have a budget, and Im doing all the work myself. Thats why it will take so long.

So with the extra money Im buying a flat screen tv and some really nice lights.

I also ordered slatwall which should be here in a few days.

Diamond plate wainscotting and some bold colors on the walls, racedeck installed and I will be set.

Nice plan.

I'm in about the same boat, 2 year old, lots of unfinished projects and not a whole lot to splurge on myself right now. I really want to do some trick looking cabinets. Aluminum would be my first choice as well, but I NEVER see that being in the budget. I kicked around the idea of installing metal industrial cabinets, but even that gets spendy. Ideally I want something that is low maintenance, wall mountable and contemporary looking. I am not a big fan of the gladiators or other "gingerbread" looking cabinets, so here I sit without anything hanging from my walls. I will be interested to see how your project turns out. What is your plan for finishing your cabinets? What door style will you use, or will you have doors?

Oh,

and what are the specs on the garage? How big, intended use, how many doors, what size, any special features like loft etc.?

The garage is aprox 22'x52'

I plan on doing care detailing, household projects, and then of course using it for storage.

I did alot of project in the house and used the garage as my woodshop.

However, Im done with that for quite a while.

My garage isnt going to be one of those garages that looks like a showroom with no work allowed.

I plan on it being a nice mixture of the cool looking showroom-functional garages.

The garage has a double overhead door and then a single overhead door. I have one service door that goes to the outside yard.

There is no loft but i do have an large attic space above it where I might put some storage items that arent needed very often.

I do plan on putting a fridge-freezer in the garage and I will also keep some lawn equipment. (no shed)

Wow, is it 52' wide or 52' deep? I would love to see some more pics of it from various angles. Is it attached to the house? I do not see any mechanical stuff, like air handler or HWT, in your pics. Are they elsewhere in the home? I like the style you're aiming for with the cabinets and handles. I might go in a similar direction with mine when the time comes.

It doenst have any mechanicals in it as they are in the house (basement).

I will try to post some more pixs.

What the heck is that big pile with the laundry basket on top?
I can't tell if it is mat flooring, collapsed folding crates, or what?

Nice looking cabinets by the way.

started putting the racedeck down.

ive come to grips after i took this photo that its going to be easier just to store everything in the basement until everything is done.

then i will fill the cabinets and hang stuff on the walls.

Nice progress!

Having that much cabinet space will really let you get organized. It will take some time, but keep focus and before you know, it'll be more to your liking.

So what's deal with all that leftover Racedeck? You get a deal on a truckload or something?

That garage looks GREAT! I'm following what you're doing close. I really dig all that cabinetry. I hate open shelving.

Care to share any thoughts on the menard's cabinets? those are their unfinished oak ones, "Quality One Woodwork." We are going to be doing their cabinets here shortly, but planned on simple priming/painting them black, to match our epoxy floor/walls (function over fashion garage here as well TONE).

What are your plans for a workbench top? And are those cabinets their kitchen or laundry ones? (LC54 I believe, vs. the W18, W24 W30 W36, etc).

Appreciate your thread and will pipe in and help however I can. Are you painting the ceiling white? shouldn't you do that before the race deck? ;)

Brian.....

Yeah, these cabinets are the regular cabinets (not the laundry)

Laundry cabinets are usually not as tall, so they give room for washer and dryer under them.
I think a real "laundry" cabinet is considered just the one size of 54" long. Thats how wide a dryer-washmachine are.

The base cabinets are along the one wall and I used wall cabinets for top and bottom on the other side.

I figured I didnt need any more base cabinets and wanted the room for the car door to swing open on that side.

The cabinets are nice, Ive worked with these in the past. I started staining the framework of all the cabinets. This is just a first coat and the pixs are misleading.

When they are done they will be almost black (yet still showing grainwork).

I did this instead of painting because I didnt want them to look as if I tried fooling anyone into thinking they are metal cabinets.

I also like the look of stain and plan on putting a nice thick clear on top.

The cabinets for my purpose are great. Fractions of what lista or baldhead would cost.

Dont get me wrong, these dont compare to them but for me, its all I needed.

As for the countertops Im still deciding. And as for painting, No I wanted to paint last. Im still doing some woodworking and drywall cutting (as you can see by the floor) so I wanted to paint last. No sense sanding and putting that much dust on fresh painted walls :)

Heres some pixs of staining the frames............

*ps Your garage is amazing!

I was referencing painting the ceiling prior to putting down the race deck. We have two 30x30 wall cabinets that we are painting to match the walls to blend in, definitely not trying to pass them off as metal cabinets (I think the doors would be a DEAD giveaway anyway on that).

Thanks for the garage comment. ;) About 1800sq ft of pure radiant heated, bliss! Keep us posted on your progress! Definitely the same here, I wanted a quality garage that is 100% functional over fashion/show. Slow going now that the 'major' painting and flooring is done.

Nah, the sanding of oak cabinets to get them ready for a nice finish is better than dealing with freshy painted walls that get all dusty.

I decided to do this first, I will simply cover the floor with drop clothes when I paint the garages ceiling and walls.

If youre planning on "painting" your oak cabinets do it outside. Painting oak is usaully frowned upon as its one of the worse looking finishes you will get.

Painted wood is best on board like poplar or high grade pine.

TONE- I understand your point, I'll share some pictures of the cabinets painted (if that isn't thread-hijacking?) The grain is unmistakable, but I do have some more plans to detract from it. ;)

Can you take a closer picture of one of the lower or upper cabinets? Maybe it is the bulb lighting, but there seems to be a brown look from the yellowish lights. Would like to see one closer up if you are able. Thanks!

Brian......

heres a pix.

it shows an area that has 3 coats of stain.

im thinking 2 more total.

i will steel wool when done, tack cloth it all, then poly it.

if you look you can still see some brown, thats slowly turning black.

it does look good in person, the pixs are hard to capture whats going on.

the flash makes them look super glossy, when they arent really.

they will be when done from the clear-poly but right now they are just stained

The mower works well. Ive had it for 3 years now. It starts easy and does the job.

I would like to eventually get a sit down tractor, but for the bucks they cost I guess walking around the yard is fine ;)

Well I got the frames completely stained. 5 coats all in all.

Just have to knock it down a bit and add the poly.

Once again, the pixs arent the best, but you should get the idea.

Im soooo happy with how these look. In person you can see how rich the stain looks and the grainwork.

I will post pixs one day when im working at home during the day. my pixs are always taken at night since thats when Im working on it...........;)

Now, for the doors.

Slooow and steady. I will kill you all with boredom before my work is done here :)

Started working on the doors.

The cabinet frames arent getting touched until they are completely cured.

I will be sanding them and slightly distressing them.

When the doors are finished i will clear everything at once.

Doors shown are bright red-not orange.

Primed and with two coats of paint.

Darker color to be added on top with glazing.

Well I have two coats of red on the cabinet doors and drawers and have just applied the first coat of glaze.

I custom mixed it with deep red, some black and actually a smidge of purple (to give it depth).

I will let this all dry then go back on top with another glaze of just deep red.

Then a light sanding before poly.

Pictures once again **** but you can kinda see what Ive got happening.
