Okay, heres a little write up about what Im doing now.

At this stage the cabinets frames are basically stained "new ebony" from sherwin williams.

The doors/drawers have been sanded, then primed, then sanded, and then painted a color called show stopper.

I applied two coats of paint.

I then mixed up a batch of glaze (paint and glaze in bucket)

In this photo im showing how to apply the glaze.

Once the glaze is all brushed on I let it sit for about 5 minutes and then use a clean rag and wipe off the excess.

I brush the glaze on with the grain but I wipe it off lightly in circles. Work it into the wood as much as possible.

Trying to leave it heavier on areas along the edges to look more aged and natural.

Once alot of the glaze is wiped off I go back and hit it with a foam roller.

It helps smooth it all out and give it a nice soft edge.

One more note, should have said this earlier.

That dark bucket with what appears to be paint in it is the glaze.

I know it looks scary putting dark **** like this on bright red cabinets but ya just gotta trust the outcome.

Not sure if I mentioned this but Im an illustration artist and a long time sign company owner.

So, I am very familiar with color/colors and how they mingle together.

If you look at the picture you might be thinking the darker edges are just shadows. Well thats actually the glaze. It has knocked down the sides and muted the bright red.

Anyway, heres the drawers with the first glaze finish all applied.

Cant wait to get this done. I want the garage done!

Got some done.

I was going to actually hire someone to do the painting. But when I was about to pull the trigger my wife says "if you do it yourself you can put some of the saving towards the garage tv"

So, I invested about 40 bucks in some booze and had two friends help me instead!

We got quite a bit done.

I primed everything so we could just bam out some paint.

The area that has no paint/primer is where my black slatwall will run. No sense wasting the primer and paint, plus I can see where the studs are for mounting.

The area above the black is still just primered. Im painting that this weekend myself.

We had to work sorta half *** backwards. Ceiling was drying so we went to the bottom.

Anyway...............

Tone nice good progress. Your comment about the viscious circle of mess is what I'm going through. Thank you for sharing the tips on colours and application, I'll get my wife to look at this. Everyone is watching now for a great finnish (no pressure)
Thanx Trevor

On a planet with alot of really Stupid people
New house with a 1 year old son :) I just cant splurge on myself right now.

So with the extra money Im buying a flat screen tv and some really nice lights.

I also ordered slatwall which should be here in a few days.

Diamond plate wainscotting and some bold colors on the walls, racedeck installed and I will be set.

Sounds to me like your splurging on yourself pretty good.
A few questions.
1- I like the race deck flooring. What is it made of ? it almost looks like rubber.
2- With all of the seams / joints how do you prevent an occasoinal spilt liquid from seeping through to the concrete underneath ?
3- In your thread I see your garage and another persons garage done up in very dark colors. Why the choice of the dark color on the wall and cabinets. I would think that dark colors in a garage, where windows are usually minimal at best, would require that much more lighting to brighten things back up.
Is there an actual purpose / reason for the dark colors or is it just a personal choice / guy thing ?

Yeah, I believe color is a personal preference.

I graduated from college with a degree in illustration art and minored in......dont laugh, interior design.

Alot of people feel white is the only choice for a garage. I have to disagree. If your doing painting or something like that yes, white is a nice choice as it keeps your colors pure.

Im not going to be doing any painting. Just basic home projects and basic car stuff.

To me an all white room seems so stark it almost hurts my eyes. My eyes are very sensitive.

Another misconception is that a ceiling has to be white.

I disagree.

I did paint this ceiling a very light grey but I was contemplating doing it black.

By painting the ceiling a dark color it brings your eyes back downward.

I played it safe here and went light just to keep the room visually the scale I desired.

Im getting close to wrapping it up. I will keep the thread rolling until its done.

Without 'swiping' the thread, Mark, I went with black on the floor and up the walls 1. becuase I knew if I burnt (welding) or something DID stain it (which i have seen on some grey epoxied floors) the black would hide it better, and black I did on the walls, as when I do grinding, and such, if hot metal sparks 'burn' into the paint/drywall, the black hides much more than a bright white would. The overall effect (in person anyway) is that the floor extends up the walls, makes it appear all that much bigger. [/thread steal]

Well I started on the slatwall. I used 1/2 plywood as a backer to help give the slatwall a better seam fit.

I just started.

I will post more after I get the rest hung. I have a friend helping me wed to hopefully put it all up.

Then its countertops and installing all the doors/drawers.

After that its organizing, lights, and diamond plate coverings............

Sorry Im so slow. Hope this isnt to boring.

When I opened this thread today, my first thought was what an idiot for doing the painting last, boy was I wrong. Damn that place looks killer, can't wait to see the doors on/drawers in and counter tops. You definately do some nice work, the red beam is nice contrast.

For an added touch, have you thought about about painting this door to match?
DSC03452.jpg

Paint the door top/frame to match corresponding upper wall, the middle, black with lines to match the slatwall and the bottom of the door, the same as the lower wall. It'll make that door blend right in.

Didnt have alot of time afterall to work around the garage. I did however do a bit.

I installed the base of my countertops. Two layers of 3/4" glued and screwed together.

This might give some-what of a "hint" as to what Im doing with.

Total for tops right now is around $35.00. Will cost another $125 to finish them. Stay tuned!

Got all the door-drawers installed over the weekend. I also got word this morning that I can pick up the remaining parts to finish off my countertop. Pixs of that soon.

I dont think I will finish this project this year. I live in Chicagoland and its getting cold quickly. I will work on it until it gets snowy and crappy.

Anyway, heres a photo of the completed bench cabinet. End panels, toekick was installed also and I got a jump on putting the handles on.

Cant wait for the top to be put on!!!!

Why can't you work inside when it's cold and snowy? We don't get much of that in Alabama, but if I lived in Chicago, that garage is the first place I'd be during the winter. I hate cold weather.

I kinda have a deal with my wife.........

I do "inside" work on the house during the winter and outside work the other three seasons.

I am finishing a home office this winter and a few other smaller projects.
