HF 26" Tool Box

Got it finally. Didn't like the white inserts for the drawers, so a cheap rattle can of gloss black from Tractor Supply:

This is a big box for the money. It's pretty darn heavy. And I like the 22" depth. I'm not totally in love with the drawer setup, but it'll hold more tools that I plan on having at my lake house. I'm thinking it needs a Harley sticker on it...

I also purchased a 44" setup for my son:

He wanted green. And this is green. I tried to talk him into the 56" box, but where he wanted to put it, that wouldn't fit. The 44" top is HEAVY. But the bottom is even HEAVIER. Don't plan on lifting either of these off the bed of a pickup without a lot of help. Or an overhead crane (like we used).

I got all four boxes for under $1140.

Yep. But in my case, I wish HF would have two rows of two narrower drawers. Sort of like my vintage Craftsman box does.

I find the three narrower drawers on the HF top box useful, but I wish they were a bit deeper.

But for my needs (at a second house), this will more than adequately handle the task.

I was looking at the HF 44, but it only has 2 deep drawers. I see it on a lot of boxes; too many shallow drawers. Storing all your sockets needs a deeper drawer to they can all stand up including deep wells.

wish they had a lot more deeper drawers. The shallow paperwork drawers don't do any good for tooling.

I have the older 44 and 26 set up and like them very much. I wish they were the deeper setup they have now, but at the time that was all they had.


Way thicker steel than any comparable box from craftsman or home depot

Ive looked at the 56" box a few times. Only thing I dont like is how the top fits onto the bottom. It doesnt fit into the bottom, it sits on top. Never saw a setup like that. The ones on display slide too easy.

I ordered a 44" top for my Matco 57" bottom, and was wondering if it really is as heavy as they say. I need the top because my bottom is stuffed full of tools.

We had to install the two handles, use a couple of straps and his overhead crane to get it off my pickup. Yeah, it's heavy. Might lighten it up some if you removed all the drawers before trying to muscle it off the bed of a pickup.

I unloaded my 44" out of the back of my truck by myself, just slid it down a plank unpacked it and rolled it into the garage didn't think it was two man or a overhead crane type of job.

Your son has good taste in colors, Was thinking I wanted the yellow until I saw the Green in the store.

Top or bottom box? The top, full width drawer in the 44" box is just deep enough for my deep sockets on Ernst rail (old picture...i've added more organization since)

If it was Packers green, I'd consider it.

And the white inserts could help with finding parts and tools.

Those 44" boxes become easily manageable by one person if you just remove the drawers.

The 26" lowers were just on sale for $279.99 last week, I think. The 44 is on sale now per the website.

Top or bottom box?

I'd prefer a lower drawer in the top box, but I'll take what I can get. The USG 44" would work fine, but I like the features of the Menards 41" or 46" boxes better. It's toss-up.
It would be a nice woodworking project to make custom socket holders. If you laid them back at an angle it would work for a shallow drawer and it might be easier to read sizes.

I guess I understand the reason a pro might want all sockets upright in one deep drawer but for many of us it isn't really a big deal to have mostly shallow drawers(in both senses of the word)
