Well I searched all over trying to find a wood topper for my 44” us general box so I could actually work on it. No luck finding anything worth while in my price range. So I just buckled down, took some time and started making one. I also made a matching one for my side cabinet. They are almost done. I got all the wood out of dumpsters on job sites and from the wood mill next to my job. I used ipe, walnut, popler, teak, mahogany, oak, and cherry. What do you guys think? In the process of making another matching side cabinet top for the other side. I’ll have more pics when the last cost of poly goes on the side box topper. Thats too nice to work on unless the kind of work youre doing is delicate like folding paper airplanes :lol_hitti

All jokes aside i would like to build one not quite as fancy for mine. Do you plan on letting it overhang or fit inside the edges at the top?

That's awesome! It's always nice when you can find and buy the solution to something, but it's even better when you make it yourself.

I would have used a piece of 3/4 plywood, called it good and ready for work.
No way I can work on that, it is better than anything I have in my house!
You know, you could start a business selling nice stuff like that and make a few dollars on the side for your projects. Go for it.

Great job!!! Count me in the camp of people that love the different wood types and colors. Might be one of the best tool box tops I've seen.

I don't understand the "It's too nice to work on" crowd. He obviously has the ability to do the work and he stated that it was all free wood pulled from dumpsters and from job site scrap. Should he do a crappy job to appease those that can't do that good of a job?

I wouldn't hesitate to put that on the top of my box and work on it. Things don't have to look crappy, you are allowed to be proud of your tools and work area.

Thank you x1mike! And in my opinion, your tool station and how it is kept is a representation of how you work. Me, ****, methodical, clean, or I won’t do the job.

What a great use of scraps! As someone else mentioned it's better to run the wood the long-way, but I'm guessing re-creating this if you get some twist/wave won't be hard.

As far as too nice, I'd go more along the line of "It's nicer to work when the workplace is nice" - it'll look great with some patina too!

That really looks great. Nice work.

Do you think you could have made that one continuous top and just cut a relief of some type in the wood to transition from the 44" to the side cabinet?

I keep thinking about lining up a few toolboxes and building a solid top. I just lack talent.

Excellent job!!! In that first picture, is that a layer of glue across the entire top?
