Trying to decide if I should buy a 44" top box.

I have two bottoms and need another box. I think the top box would work well but I think the better value is another bottom box.

Not building a Steevo Bench at this time.

Any thoughts?

"If you're looking for most storage for the dollar,"

Just remember, that math formula is only a very SMALL part of choosing a box that fits your needs..
What you're storing, how you want to organize it aligned with the drawer height, length, width and number of each is critically important> When you do not consider that as well as cost.. you end up with piles of tools in a large drawer .. or wasted space or tools that do not fit in the available drawer space

That's depends if you have the foot print for another. I have 2 myself but no room for another in the space they're in. In that case you will need to go vertical with a top box.

This. What do you need more, floor space or work bench space? I have a 33" top on my 44" bottom to give a small work space to the side.

I would grab another bottom unless space is limited. You would get more storage area i believe. And you still keep the bench top to work on.

Looking at the spread sheet, a 26" will give you the best value, takes less footprint than a 44" bottom but gives you more Sq. in. than a bottom 44" and you get to keep all your counter top space on your existing 44's" without having to get 44" top.

It's easy to find spots for a 26" set than a 44". There also easy to move around the shop compared to anything else. They're just not as **** as a 44" or a 56".

I'm not too keen on the 44" top as I am with the bottom. I find the 44" bottoms very practical and useful.

I'm in a similar boat but have very little room left to add another 44" bottom. I'm currently considering a top, a 7 drawer side box, or the 26" box. Have you considered the side box?

I have the 44" bottom, and the side box. Both full. I'm going to be getting another 44" bottom, and put the side box between the 2. Then plan to rebuild my work bench, basically make it longer.

For those of you who have both the top and bottom, do they have the lever to lock each drawer closed? I know they all have locks for the entire chest.. My local store had all sizes but the 44".

Thanks to the mods for putting this in the right place.

I can make room for another 44" roller, I think...

Rocket - Good spreadsheet. That pretty much confirmed what i was thinking on a price basis. I hadn't thought about the 26 set. That could be an excellent value at $299.00. I thought i had recently seen it at that? It just isn't as **** as the 44 tho.

The 44 roller is a good mix of drawers. I want a top 44 to have a "set". But i still think the 44 roller is the way to go value wise.

Need make sure i can shuffle stuff around for another roller... And i could reallocate drawers between cabinets. Time to check out the space...

You also have to deal with drawers that are only 14 3/8" deep in the top chest. That may or not be a problem for the OP. But just going by the math, it is definitely the best deal.

Very true but then we should all have Lista's or Vidmar's with full 28" deep drawers. Sorry, I digressed

So many good points. To the op, it all comes down to what YOUR use needs are. Think in terms of what your storing, and how close you want and need to be to these tools. I try to keep the things I use the most in the closest most centralized easy to access places. Buying another top might save a few steps grabbing tools, buying a bottom provides counter space, but takes up floor space. Cost difference per storage inch is insignificant, how you make use of space is. Making good use of your space will save you time, which is the same as saving you money.

I have the 44 bottom with MDF surface and I use the top of it a good bit, since my workbench is on the other side of 2 car garage and my tool cart only catches so much. Lucky for me I have plenty of tool storage space now and don't have to consider a top box. I wasted a lot of time waiting for my CM 26 combo boxes to go on sale and I had to return my first HF 44 due to a dent. If I were to do it all over, I'd go with Extreme 55 or 56 combo, HF biggest tool cart, or 2!, a nice 8 foot workbench and call it a day.
