I just scored an almost endless supply of used deck boards.

I was thinking of getting the subj planer. I am no woodworker and certainly don't need the highest-end machine. For almost $150 less (with coupon) than some other planers I see on HD and Lowes sites, I think this would suit me fine.

I searched and didn't find a thread on this planer.

Any experience with and/or opinions on the HF 95082 2.5 HP 12" Thickness Planer?

All bench top planers suffer from chatter (not heavy enough), cutter head movement (weak locking or no locking mech), power issues, and blade endurance. Period.

That being said, there are some that actually worth paying the lower entry price for. I dont think the HF model will be one of them. Besides performance, blade availability is likely not going to exist in the future?

But... if you are really wanting one. Here is MO of the best options:

Best - Dewalt DW 735

Best price/performance - Ridgid R4331

All the others are basically the same. Dewalt is overbuilt and pretty dang good, and the Ridgid is a good planer at a great price WITH cutter head lock which improves things.

Good luck.

Any sand embedded in your deck boards will eventually tear up the blades, too. I know people who have planed leftover pallet wood (oak) - but only once ;-)

A used Craftsman (made by Parks) 12" planer is a beast of a machine. Mine was built in the mid to late 1950s. With the cast iron base and the 2 hp motor it weighs in the neighborhood of 600 lbs. If you are lucky, you may be able to find one of them in your area for around the same price that you would pay for the new HF machine.
