I have a 5 hp sanborn air compressor that I have had for about 25 years. The rod seized and now I found out I can't get parts anymore. This weekend I bought a 145 PSI TWIN CYLINDER AIR COMPRESSOR PUMP 5 HP from HF for $169 and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with this pump. I have to make a few parts to retrofit to my compressor. Any comments thanks in advance.

A guy I know is getting 1.5-2 years out of them running it 3-5 days a week. I don't know why he keeps buying them he's on his 3rd one.

I run mine for a few hours, 1 or 2 days a week. I've had it about 9 years now.

Do you know how many hours he runs it each day? Does he ever change the oil? What RPM is he turning the pump?

This would be useful information.

Thanks.

Let me know how that pump worked out for you. I'm thinking about replacing my pump with that exact Harbor Freight unit.

I was at a buddies place helping him with his cylinder heads, porting to be exact.

I was using a air die grinder for doing the bulk of metal removal and his compressor, just like that HF one ran fine non stop for over an hour, probably closer to two hours non stop. When I left it sounded fine.

The next day when I wasn't there he fired it up and said it now has a knocking noise. It was fine for over a year before I showed up. Seems like it is OK as long as it doesn't see any constant use like we were doing.

Mm

I've run mine for a couple hours continuous many times while using my blasting cabinet. I haven't had any problems.

I just got this same pump for $25, new open box item. Its missing the bolt and washer for the pulley. If anyone has this part off a bad pump, I would like to purchase the bolt/washer. Thanks.

keep in mind that a guy that got 9 year out of his is using a different pump. HF seems to sell a decent one for a while to get good reviews then they cost reduce the **** out of it and sell it on the old good ones reviews. Ive seen this countless times where they sell the same looking thing with a slightly different part number and the reviews all quote the old part number. cant speak to the compressor head, I just refuse to believe any reviews that are more than a year old on their stuff

This thread is from 2011.

My compressor pump is still working great.

With Harbor Freight, you might get an item that is broken out of the box. Some things may work well for a year or two. Then there is the rare one that never dies.

Several years ago, I put together a gas powered air compressor using this pump. I set the pulleys up to turn the pump at the maximum rpm. When I sold it three years later, it was this running like a champ. I did, however, put on higher quality air filters, and I changed the oil excessively.
