Got an open-box deal on the earlier model (#47840), but it needed a new bushing and HF no longer sells spare parts for it, so I traded it in on a new one. The new model is a "***********" style, 5 x 5 in. cutting capacity with a 10 amp, variable speed motor. The design looks similar to the Milwaukee and DeWalt deep cut saws. Uses the same 44-7/8 x 1/2 x .025 blade and comes with a 14 tpi blade for cutting wood, so you'll need an 18 or 24 tpi blade for cutting metal. Includes a handy molded plastic carrying case with room for the saw and a couple of spare blades, and features a pouch for user manual or other docs.
My first impression was favorable. Seems well made and solid (and a little on the heavy side). When I flipped it over to get at the insides and install a blade, I was shocked to discover that there is NO BACK COVER
. The insides - drive and guide wheels and spinning blade - are completely exposed.
Nothing keeps this saw from grabbing whatever comes close while it's running. I can't believe this thing is UL or OSHA approved!
Anybody else think this is bizarre and astonishingly unsafe?
