Has anyone used the HF Storehouse nut, bolt, screw, etc. assortment sets? How are they? I'd love to buy the Griot's Garage set but can't justify it and Costco doesn't have there's now. Any other suggestions?

I thought the sheetmetal screws were a little on the soft side.

The hitch pins and clips have saved me a couple of time on the riding mower and I've been happy with the o-ring kit.

I'd be leary of buying bolts and stuff at HF for fear of them being counterfeit.I suppose if your not using them for anything critical they might be ok.I'm not a HF basher just like to know when I bolt things together they can handle the torque.Counterfeit bolts imported from China and stamped as grade 8 have caused some big problems in the last ten years.

For 1/4" and up, try Tractor Supply - sold by the lb, including Grade 8. I bought 2 lbs of Grade 5 and Grade 2 1/4" stuff yesterday - nuts, washers, bolts in the 1" and 3/4" length - total $5. Try that at Lowes. The only "down side" possibly is that TSC stuff has colors - Grade 2 is bright cad plate, Grade 5 has a mil green look to it and Grade 8 is gold cad plate like most Grade 8 bolts. Makes it easy to pick out what you need from the bin though.

For small stuff, try http://www.microfasteners.com/

I have the Storehouse thing, had it for a long while. Not bad and pretty handy but good for general use things and nothing under much load. Good for repairing your kids toys, would not put the bed together with the stuff .

Many true statements here. If you aren't using their assortments for critical/safety applications, all is well.

If you want to save a nickel on a safety concern, maybe that repair isn't for you.

Just to give you an idea on some possible side effects of HF assortments, General erm Government Motors issued a Technical Service Bullitin on HF fuses. They were failing to pop at the proper amperage and destroying some components and circuits.

Obviously its your call, but I would think twice about saving a few bucks :eek7:

I just looked that up about the fuses. GM Dealers were buying them at harborfreight and using them in customer cars. Is there anything those scumbags wont do to save a buck?

They are probably oriental made. That means softer steel than real "made in the USA" hardware. What are your needs? For many tasks, cheaper hardware will be just fine. If you are replacing hardware on an old American made car, forget using the soft oriental hardware. If you are using it to fix today's products, most likely it is good enough.

Their Storehouse stuff like hitch pins, snap rings, o-rings can be nice and can save your *** in a pinch.

I bought the large hardware assortment in the metal case w the 4 sliding pinkish/reddish drawers. Some of the fasteners are so poorly threaded they don't fit - ANYTHING. It's not just a matter of metric and standard being confused, it's poor quality control resulting in threads that just don't work.

Get actual fasteners from someplace more reputable. And for the record I'm a Harbor Freight fan.

a buddy of mine has some of that Storehouse assortment stuff and about half of the nuts and bolts we went to use on one project were just useless. The threads were just so horribly cut that most of them would not even thread together by hand.

Chrysler/Fiat Motors issued the same warning to their Service Engineering Group. Had nasty pictures of $$$ electrical stuff melted because of these fuses. As far as the "grade-nuthing" nuts and bolts.. I HATE breaking off bolts and causing more headaches. It's just not worth the agrevation to me.

Thanks for the advice. Anyone buy these things from Rivercityindustrialsupply on Ebay? They have grade #5 & 8 assortments that look useful. They also have 100% rating. What you think?
