Have access to a 80 gallon with a bad pump, wondered if the hf pump is good and I should give it a try
I recently was wondering the same thing, needed a pump for a 60 gal unit I picked up. Most non-china pumps are expensive. I don't have personal experience with the HF but have read mostly good things about them (cast iron, not junky aluminum). One complaint is that they have "weird" sized fittings that can be a pain to deal with. I ended up buying a pump made by Schulz mostly because I figured it would fit my application better and likely a bit better quality. The pump worked out well for my application and is a quality piece. Worth checking out: http://www.schulzamerica.com/products/ Price was good. Made in Brazil IIRC.
I've got limited experience with both the 3hp and 5hp versions. I came across two Powermate 80 gallon "4.7" hp compressors (18A motors). One had a damaged original pump. The other had a HF 3hp pump already installed. These two compressors went to two of my brothers. I helped with the 3hp rebuild. All went well and the pump required nothing other than cleaning off lots of dust. For a pump that doesn't claim to have low noise levels it's pretty quiet. It appears to run at lower rpm vs many CH pumps. I have no idea how it handles heavy duty cycle as it will never see such work now. If I needed a replacement 3hp pump I wouldn't hesitate.
So my other brother took the compressor with the damaged oem pump and replaced it with the 5hp HF pump. I haven't seen the install and he just had it up and running. We debated just using the 3hp pump so the second setup would be identical to the first. However, brother 2 wanted to do air sanding so we figured the extra flow would be handy. I'm guessing with the reduced pulley needed to run on a 4hp motor he is probably getting 13 cfm vs 10 from the smaller pump. So far he hasn't finished setting things up so I can't say beyond we have tried both. While brother 2 expects to do sanding this is still something where the compressor will sit most days as this is all hobby work.

But is it the same pump HF sells separately? IDK.The HF pump on their 60 gallon unit is made in Italy. That compressor gets great reviews

I have a HF 3 hp pump running with a 2 hp repulsion start/induction run (google it) on 24/7 for 8 or 10 years, no problems. That being said, there is very little air use on this system.
Would I buy this pump again?? Absolutely. It cycles about once every 24 hours. It is in my basement and is quiet. That being said, this is a case of one. My experience will not equal yours. Jus' sayin'.
