I haven't been in my HF in months, and its like nobody that used to work there is still around, lots and lots of new and dumb employees. The place was a zoo Friday night (first day of 3 day parking lot sale) with one trainee on one register and one older employee on the other and a line to the back of the store waiting to check out with 3 or 4 employees wandering around, but not opening any new registers.

Lots of empty areas on the shelves, and all or most of the single sockets on clearance. Looked like the place was in financial trouble to me.

Oh yeah. We shop at harbor freight because we like the tools better than snap on. Not because we dont have the money for snap on.

I have only been to one of those parking lot sales (just happened to be up in Mo that day). They could not keep the store nor the lot stocked fast enough.

As far as long term employment, I seriously doubt they pay enough to stick around. Just a guess....

Mine has a few longer employees at it, however the economy has been getting better, and HF pays right around min wage to begin with, so maybe they got better jobs.

The few times a year I wander into HF, there is one big bull **** that is hard to miss always there, but otherwise I do go there enough to to reconize anybody eles. I would think employee turn over is pretty good there. Besides, other then knowing where stuff is, do you expect to get advise from them on your project. HF is not a local family own hardware store.

My HF store has had the same general staff for 3+ yrs now and most of them are very helpful / polite folks. I enjoy going there. The guys who load up the heavy boxes are the coolest, always cutting up and telling jokes to people.

deal with snap on ...same guy for decades

Murrica. **** yea? :rolleyes2

Hopefully some of those 56" boxes will go on sale then....

I saw ONE sale ad for that box for $699, and I passed up on it thinkin "nah they'll go on sale again and I'll pick one up".......Haven't seen a sale ad for them that cheap since. That is a LOT of box for $699.

Yep, my dealer has been there since the mid-80s. It's not a **** shoot when purchasing from him either.
Are you guys serious or joking? This is like somebody saying, "My Hyundai dealership has poor service" and your reply is, "That's why you should have went with Cadillac."

You do realize budget plays a role in people's shopping choices right? Not to mention that most people who use their tools at home, on weekends, have no need to spend the Snap On money even if they are more than able to.

Management at the corporate level has changed ALOT in the past year, lots of DM's being let go, RM's being moved around, all leads to store "cleanings". I work literally in the next building in the shopping center next to HF (where i used to work many moons ago) and i keep up with all the management there. Turn over was very high when i worked there. they like to try and find younger kids fresh out of HS, at the time i worked there I was fresh out also, but im not really a **** like they were. I watched probably ~20 go in and out in a years time.

I think the one in my area has at least kept half the employees over the last 2 years. They have an assistant manager I don't like and would like to see him move on soon.....

"Managers" at a place like HF, or most any place the employs min wage grunts, are typically very young and not experienced in the least at managing people. The corp wants them to be a blank slate and simply act as a go-between between the corp policy and the line level employees. They aren't trained in, expected to or empowered to accomodate customers. They're not managing a business, they're acting as the NCO to the employees. Their bottom line answer to most everything is "that's policy". They probably aren't the least bit aware of real business concepts like gross sales, shrinkage, goodwill etc. They simply fill out some forms for the regionals and schedule the underlings.

Just about any retail nowadays is high turnover. Retail is no longer a career, it is just a job.

Let's face it though the two are entirely different situations. The SO dealer is the owner and deals with high end equipment and professionals only basically. HF is a store with low to mid range equipment and deals with DIY and professionals and the stores hire min wage people and managed by just above min wage people. It is common to see a high turnover in a business with low wages. If I want to get ripped off by paying for the name on a tool when I'm not needing it for a living or be using it a lot then I'll see if I can track down a SO dealer that will be willing to meet me and give of his precious time to sell to me.

The lady working in Sears appliance section I bought a washer from a couple years ago had either a 35 or 40 year pin from Sears. Those days are over in retail, with "maybe" the partial exception being Home Depot which has a fair mix of older employees, but still a lot more kids recently.
