All,

My favorite wrenches are my old SK made Craftsman Professional SAE's. Which are just a re-branded SK long pattern. I really love the long handles and leverage. Well I don't have the same in metric, and right now I've fallen on hard times so it's not likely I'll get the SK's anytime soon.

So I'd like to hear from someone who has the long HF wrenches. How do you like them? Ever had any problems with slippage, poor fit, or rounding bolts? Breakage?

For 90% of my wrenching I have standard length 30 year old Craftsman or Husky. Just wondering if I got these and used them if I'd be pissed off or delightfully surprised? Where sockets and ratchets are concerned I've been absolutely delighted, and very satisfied.

What say the hive mind?

I used them starting out as a tech many years ago. They served their purpose. I broke a few over the years, but I mainly used them for alignments and I was pulling extremely hard with a pipe, lol.

They did have a tendency to round fasteners off but thatll happen with any wrench on a frozen tie rod jamb nut.

Personally unless you have an immediate need for them I would pass until you have a higher budget. Then again they are only what $25? hard to go wrong at that price

So far I like the Gearwrench long pattern wrenches I picked up a couple of months ago. Not SK money and they seem nice. Just a thought if you have a few more dollars to spend over HF. I have no personal experience with the HF version.

My only complaint is that they don't carry full sets of them. Mine dont have slippage or fitment issues but my sets are of an older manufacture than the current production ones. I use mine mostly for front suspension rebuilds.

YMMV but mine paid for themselves over night and i would say they are on par with some of the Husky stuff I own.

I have the metric and standard set. They work fine 90% of the time for me. Did notice some flex in the claw this last week changing a tie rod (stubborn SOB) and ended up rounding off the flats on the rod end. Had to use a pipe wrench. For the money, they're decent IMHO.

Other than the metric skipping sizes, they are OK on a tight budget for something that's not a "go-to" tool. I've had both sets for about a year. They are fine for the home shop, but I'd spend more for something better if you are planning on using them daily. The quality is eh, well, what can I say. At least the chrome doesn't cut my hands like the Tekton wrenches I have did.

I have a set in SAE. I used them sparingly in a professional setting and they haven't let me down yet. I did buy a high quality 3/4 long one from a truck because that is the most commonly used for me. Definitely not a bad investment but they are rough and cheap feeling.

When I needed a bigger, longer set of wrenches (1" to 2")

I took a chance with good ol' HF polished wrenches. So far none

have let me down. The wrenches are a bit sloppy to the

fasteners, but not to the point of slipping. I will say for

what I use them for, they serve the purpose well, especially

for what they cost. Couldn't say if the smaller sizes are as good.

I've used a few, can't honestly ever remember a wrench flexing under non-extreme use. But these do. Open end prone to widening. I don't like using tools that feel like junk.

I bought a set so that I'd have a longer 9/16" on the trail for breaking down/mounting beadlocks (32 3/8"-16tpi stover nuts per wheel will bruise the hell out of your palm). I use them quite a bit and don't have any complaints. I would have replaced them with snap on for the main box if I felt they were rounding off fasteners, but I haven't had any gripes.

They aren't made in the US...

I bought their ball pein hammers, and they were made in China...but they're worth what they cost...

Some of their tools come from Taiwan...

Where these are made, i don't know...

Skips in wrench sizes would drive me to drink, unforgivable sin!!!

Okay that looks like a potential winner right there. I'd like something from say 6 or 7mm on up to somewhere around 22-24mm; I'll start looking for that or the closest thing.

I've heard a lot of good things about Tekton. Yeah they're imports, but it seems they buy the better stuff. Thanks for the reminder sir!

How about these Napa (Taiwan) from Cripe -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Napa-7PC-Fu...751?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d4b5b917f

Add in the 16mm (Gearwrench), 17mm - Armstrong, and 19mm - Armstrong from Cripe also for a total of $24.50 plus shipping. Use the "request total from seller" on your cart and Cripe will combine shipping. The NAPA may have been made by Gearwrench. And the Cripe Gearwrench are Taiwan and the Armstrong USA. And you'll have 10mm to 19mm. You can fill in later with larger wrenches if you like.

I have Gearwrench stubbies and like them - good feel, nice chrome and fit well on fasteners. And I pieced together a set of Armstrong, Craftsman Professionals (USA closeouts) along with some Allen and KD from 6mm to 24mm plus a 27mm over last winter. I have used a few and like the feel in the hand, the fit on the fastener and the finish. So I recommend both Gearwrench and Armstrong.

I like mine, but they're a couple of years old and HF does change suppliers. You might check out Cripe Distributing. They have a set of US Napa long handle wrenches for the same price as HF.
