I feel the value of the snap on would likely retain itself unlike the HF. In other words, 2000 now may yield 1800 later. HF may be 700$ now, $200$ later. Also, the warranty is SO all the way.

Actually the larger HF boxes hold their value pretty darn well. A box that sells for $700 after any coupon will likely bring around 70%+ used if in good shape.

Don't count on any warranty on a used SO box. SO's warranty is to original purchaser only and they enforce it now. You'll likely only get warranty support from a local dealer assuming you have a good relationship and routinely $pend big bucks on his truck.

Interesting Dave, I was unaware that Snap on didn't transfer warranty. What are they thinking? $6000 for a box of metal and you can't sell it or you loose the warranty you payed for...HF sounding better all the time.

I can't fault the HF boxes. I've looked them over several times over the past few years. They seem to be one of the best economy boxes out there. I can't fault the SO boxes either, although I've never owned one. Although I would be proud to own one, the right deal just never materialized.

But as I get older and wiser, I find that I really hate buying things more than once.

When I started out, I bought a fairly inexpensive Cman roller back before HF existed. It was all I could afford. But I soon outgrew it, and the drawers were binding from being overloaded. I ended up buying a bigger/better Cman box. It was nicer . . . for a while. Then it too flexed and sagged. I still have both Cman boxes, but they are relegated to holding spare tools and junk.

My primary box now is a Macsimizer triple bank. I bought it used about 5 years ago. It was a $6800 box (retail) that I bought for $2000 in literally like new condition. This box has been awesome. I really never knew what a good quality box was like until I used this one, and it will easily last me the rest of my life. I just wish I had bought it first. I have since added a second Macsimizer, also bought used, and feel I'm done with buying tool boxes forever.

My opinion is to buy the best that you can, as soon as you can afford it. Then you will never have to buy another one. It will save you money in the long run, regardless if you are a professional or DIYer.

I think SO just got fed up with guys buying used boxes and then asking for a brand new set of slides. Or someone buying a bucket of worn out/rusty tools at G-sales and then sending in for shiny new replacements to ***** on Ebay.

I can't say I blame them too much. The dealer's can always do what they want though.

Surely bottom feeders like the jackass in the Craftsman warranty video that didn't like that little spec of paint on the screwdriver he bought used at a garage sale didn't screw up something for the rest of us

I like how some of the members throw out these magical numbers, especially in regards to "resale" value, not only do these numbers not factor in condition, they don't factor in age. It's a No brainer... If your idea is to buy a toolbox, keep it a couple years and resell it... Buy the Hf. I don't spend much on the truck anymore, but I've never had a dealer ask me if I was the "original purchaser", well... On the flip side, At least you get a 90 day warranty on the Hf <---- which doesnt transfer and requires "proof of purchase". Don't get me Wrong... For what it is, the Hf offers a lot of storage for the $$$, if I had a immediate need for storage and was limited on Cash, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. When I bought my 40 year old snap on box, it needed some New slides, I called Snap on and not only was I surprised that they still carried the slides, they offered to cover them under warranty. I declined the notion and paid the $30 bucks because the box was older than me, based off of how stout this thing is.. I have no doubts of it outlasting me.

I guess I wonder how they would treat me, who's never purchased anything from Snap On (truck or from their website), if I called them up about a warranty issue with a box. I have purchased a couple of things from eBay or a pawn shop, but there's no verification that I've ever purchased anything from them.

It's tough to say, plenty of feel good stories where Snap on has warranted stuff without "proof of purchase". My gut tells me there New policy was set in place to curtail the boxes of broken tools hitting there shipping dock. If your main concern is warranty, maybe used Snap on or Hf isn't your best option. I know personally ... I'm concerned with quality and manufacturer support well above warranty. Maybe look into strictly toolboxes, menards I believe they carry a decent warranty, but remembered its always subject to change.

They'd start by telling you to contact your local dealer.

I wouldn't worry much about warranty on a used SO box. If you check out a used SO box and it's in good shape and all the drawers operate smoothly then it'll likely serve you very well going forward.

Just curious, how much did you get for your used HF box. Mostly trying to figure out the used market price of a HF box. A 44" sold on Craigslist the other night in about 4 hours for $225. I was going to buy another one, but it was gone before I could act on it.

I sold a 44" HF roller and the 7 drawer end cabinet for $350 to a buddy of mine.

guess i'm a fool then. :3gears:

i was looking to get the hf 56" box, but came across a deal on an old snap-on box for a few hundred dollars more. i don't ever plan on selling it, but if i had to due to economics or space, it would retain it's value much better than the harbor freight box. ideally, i'd like to pass it on to my son when he's older so he can fix all of my broken stuff. :rocker:

At first thought you would think so but it isn't true. I have bought HF boxes at the coupon price and when I need to sell got 100% of purchase price as soon as I listed it. I don't know if the same is true of the SO box. Possibly but I bet any wear would depreciate the SO significantly.
