Are the HF Pittsburgh Pro chrome sockets a good choice for the DIY user working on their own projects? Will it get the job done or is it worth it to step up to the next level in quality?

The Pittsburgh Pro are fine for a DIYer. I use them in my pit box and they've taken a pretty decent beating with no breaks yet.

Yes, they work just fine.. Ratchets are also a great buy from HF..

Just throwing this in there, but Sears has sales going on right now online.. They have a 250 piece tool kit with a 3 drawer composite case for like $115 with free shipping till tomorrow I think

I have the reverse torx deep socket set from HF. I've only used one of them once and it seemed to do fine.

I will say this, not sure if it matters much, but the chroming looks good!

i have some of there chrome taiwan made sockets and there great. nothing i own of theres is china made so im not sure if there diff or not.

Tekton also makes some great sockets in singles. taiwan made as well. chrome is perfect. very nice fit and finish. nice section of sizes as well. i have about 6 or 7 of there sockets i have bought. from 5 or 6mm all the way to 1-1/8in and there they are all very well made... i think they also have a cheaper china made line as well so make sure you get the right ones.

same goes for kobalt. great stuff. taiwan made. just make sure you look at what your getting. there is some china junk mixed in.

Size selection is better on the goofy colored sockets, but they're decent. I beat the heck out of mine.

I have two levels of tools: Snap-on and other hi end stuff, then I have the Harbor Freight,
Stanley, Craftsman, Husky, Kobalt whatever set up. I use Snap-on when working on MY car and I use the other stuff when working on stuff around the house. Funny thing is, that there are at least two pawn shops near me where I can score roughly 20 or so sockets for around $10. That and I have two drawers in the roll cab filled with extra misc sockets in case I need a backup. I recently acquired the Harbor Freight Pro SAE and Metric sockets and they look to be ok. Im also liking Duralast stuff as well. Ratchets sorry, im sticking with my Snap-ons or my Matco.

HF is perfectly fine for a DIYer. I've used HF tools to work on my own cars and was able to save lots of money from DIY work. Like stated above, the only problem is the sets skip sizes, and there are no singles. However, I've never had any issue with the missing sizes when I owned Japanese cars, but it became a real problem when I switched to German (16mm).
