I was going to pick up the old orange 20 ton last summer, but the coupon I had for it expired before I could get there.

Then they redesigned it to the grey one and I went to 2 stores but they didn't have the new one yet.

Then the local store to me had the new one but I was in a car at the time.

I'm glad I waited. The press is on sale now, and with the 25% off coupon is really damn cheap!

I tried to buy one today but all they had were the orange ones. I'd prefer the new one, so I'm going try HF in the next town over.

You might be able to, the new version is only two boxes. One for the jack (small) and one for everything else in a box about 12x12 inches and maybe 6 feet long?

Saw a guy cram one of the new silver ones into a crown Vic trunk with the back seat down for what it's worth.

Make sure you grab a 25% coupon vs the 20%...there are plenty out there.

5th gen Camaro here. Trunk opening is terribly small (though it could be put in from the passenger compartment, maybe?).

Truck's going to be off the road another couple weeks at least. Head gasket job has turned into take every fscking thing off the front of the truck to remove the front cover in order to reset the timing chain tensioner.

Well, no arbor plates in the box. They don't carry any replacement parts...so either wait 3 weeks to send this back and them to send another or 2 hour round trip taking it back.

Unless its changed their arbor plates exploded during use anyway.

If you really want them try calling the 1800 number on the manual. I've read people have good experiences getting parts that way.

Picked one up today, I must say for $130 it is a decent unit. As has been stated before the new press plates appear to be solid torch cut steel and not the old cast ones.

Their 50 ton model is also on sale + 25% off coupon = about $550.
However it is website only. No in store purchase option.
Shipping is $94.
Regular price is $899.
I also compared to Greg Smith. This looked like a good deal to me.
Arrives 12/27:)
I've been using the HF 12 ton model for years without any leaks or breaks.

Correct, and if you read the linked thread somewhere above comparing the models you'll note the heavier construction of the new model (60603). The 60603 was hard for me to find locally and one store tried to do the old bait and switch by telling me they had plenty of the new model and actually had none, but plenty of the old model. Fortunately another store had one, and only one, of the new model and was nice enough to hold it for me until I got there to pick it up.

You have that backwards, Joe. The Silver model is the new version. It bolts together. The orange model is the original and the frame is welded.

Wes

Woops sorry thanks for the correction. I was looking at them too and I thought the lady said the silver was the old version.

That is what the lady at the first store told me as well, they really want to clear out the old orange ones that pre-teens welded together

i called all the hf in my area . one said they have one in stock and will save it for me. 45 miles later I'm there and they sell me one. while loading it one employee drops one box and it rips open. its the orange one not the new silver one. i immediately make them return it and find a manager. told him about diving an hour to get there cause they claimed they had the silver one in stock.
his response was sorry ….
angry email to corporate hf is next.
they advertise these on sale till 12/24 yet no one has them in stock.
not happy with these tool sellers.
Yes they will try to sell you the old model first.
even though they have the sliver one as the floor display.
buyer beware!!!

They should put the old orange one on clearance and a way cheaper price, and put a new item# for the new silver one.

The easy way to tell of it is the old one is that it will be 3 boxes with one being a large flat box. If it is only two boxes, it is the new one. Staff at the store really believes customers don't care as long as it is a 20 ton press.....it is two different item numbers but they are listed as being interchangeable.

They do not have the same item number.

Orange = #32879
Silver = #60603

The problem is that the numbers come up interchangeably on their computer so when you call they will say yes we have #60603. But if you dig and ask if it is orange or silver they will say "well it is orange but it's the same as the silver one."

one each 12 ton, 20 ton were in the open box area marked down. They were missing some of the pieces. I guess the china man does not check what they put in the box.

Went to HF store...the 60603 (silver 20 ton) was on display. I asked if they had any in stock. "Yes, only the orange." We have to sell the orange before we can sell the silver. I left and as I was leaving the fork truck driver had just finished unloading a truck in the parking lot. I asked him if he remembered unloading any 60603 from the truck he said yes, pointed to four of the 60603 boxed presses. He said they have been selling them. He loaded three the previous day. Still had some in stock. He wanted to know if there was a problem. I said, no problem...the clerk inside the store said they did not have any and are suppose to sell the orange presses before the silver. He said just go inside down the hall from the bathrooms and see the manager, Jeff, and he will gladly take care of me.
I now have a press #60603 20 Ton silver...MSRP $299.00, on sale for $169.99. I used a 25% off coupon ($127.49) plus .07 sales tax ($8.92) for a total of $136.41.

The thing that gets me, if they want to clear out the orange why not make them cheaper than the silver? And why have the silver as the display model and then sell someone the orange? Harbor Freight is all about cheap and volume, customer service is somewhere WAY down the ladder for most of their employees, with a few nice exceptions like the people you dealt with and the staff at the second store I went to.

Their inventory system allows them to track which one they have in the store but does show them alternative numbers. The store employees can see which item they have on hand, you just have to explain that the two are constructed differently so you need to know if they actually have the 60603 on hand and not an interchange item but the actual 60603.

I don't believe there's any corporate desire to clear out the orange model any faster than it's being cleared out.

They changed suppliers or whatever, the orange one will eventually work it's way out of the system.

As far as the silver model on display goes, who knows - maybe the store sold the orange display model, or someone returned a silver or whatever, and NOS orange stuff got put on a truck for that store.

It's just part of the HF experience, I guess.

I actually expect that they have a SECOND supplier, and are getting both items in depending on availability. Most of their customers probably don't know the difference, or care. Those of us who are 'in the know' often know more than the employees, who aren't told about the nuances of the products since most of them don't know much (if anything) about the products anyway.

I've always had good luck speaking to the manager, and once they know you you're 'in'.

I picked up one of these as well. Went in for a blast cabinet and came out with the redesign. I'm already thinking about putting a air-over jack on it. Seems to be worth the $130 I paid. Thanks to the OP.
