Guys I am a fan of HF, I know some things are somewhat of lesser quality but for those once while use its perfect for me.Now tool cabinets, well few yrs ago I purchase the lower 44" rolling tool cabinet I have to say it is fantastic and it was an actually on sale for less money. No fake ads on this go round,so I made my first big purchase on a US General and have been very happy with it. So for a few yrs now I have been watching and waiting for the upper to go on a real sale. During this waiting I always see the lower cabinets of difference sizes go on sale which some or their fake sales. But I never see the upper cabinets go on sale? Anyone have a theory on why never see the upper cabinet go on sale either a fake sale or real sale. Why?

My theory with absolutely no evidence to back it up: the lower cabinet is the starter kit. Once you’ve bought that, they have you. You don’t have many options to find a matching top chest. Certainly you can put a smaller chest on top, but if you really want a matching chest, then you have to go back to HF. There is no sense in discounting something that has a captive market.

The last couple years they have come out with a 15% off coupon around Black Friday which has no exclusions at all. It is the only time to get a deal on all of the items that are excluded from the normal 20% off coupons and never have their own coupons. Hopefully they come out with one this year too.

If we're all thinking it, it needs no evidence in this case.

I haven't found a tool box retailer to be any different.

Personally, I like the soft close feature offered for some brand's higher priced boxes. The common forgotten area to have such feature are the doors. They come with a sad weak magnetic piece that doesn't hold good. So they put a turn lock that uses a key. Often, the key breaks, goes missing, or isn't nearby & is just frustrating.

The new US General boxes are deeper than the bottom box you and I have. I don't think the top box they sell now fits correctly.

They are great boxes. I have them and their carts and I’m a professional mechanic and they are just fine I also have a couple at home too never had an issue. I’m not sure about the new boxes though I haven’t heard about any issues of them not fitting as listed above but I don’t know.

Last winter I bought a 44" HF top and bottom box. Coupon for each. They do go on sale sometimes.

I ended up buying two of the 4 top boxes I have during one of their parking lot sales where they often clearance out scratch and dent stuff. Paid around half price and one of them is dented only in the back, the other on one side that you don't see where I have it anyway. Bought a tool cart the same way. My store seems to have those kinds of things every now and then, and honestly, I couldn't care less about dents in those spots for that kind of savings!

Just kept checking back whenever they had one of those sales and eventually got the two I needed even in the right color (black). Only works if you aren't in a hurry obviously ;)

I've been puzzling over the HF toolbox phenomenon for years. One of the primary reasons I come to GJ, it's a great place to do research. After a few years of observation, here's my conclusion: The strategy most buyers use seems to be:

Buy a lower 44 cabinet on sale, because it's all you can justify to your wife, who already think it costs too much, even on sale. Be pleased with it, and use it for a few months and then start getting truck tool envy. Buy a Snap-on emblem for $35 on ebay, and replace the US General logo with that. That buys you a few months more of satisfaction; you brag to your friends about your Snap-on toolbox, and with them only seeing it in passing by it, you figure that they're impressed. Then you start getting envious again, plus the latches start to irritate you, and you're reluctant to let your buddies work in your garage because they'll notice that the box is fake. So you watch for a Snap-on box on Craigslist the same color as your US General. With the Snap-on logo you thoughtfully applied a few months ago to your current box and the same color, you can probably sneak in a similar size and color truck box in without the wife figuring it out.

When you finally find a new box, it has a top box with it. You buy it, and sneak it into the house. You put your US General box out for sale on Craigslist for $200 more than you paid for it, with a story of it as a 1990's Snap-on box from your ex-wifes father in laws estate; and claim you know nothing about it, but just want it to go to a good home to make your ex FIL proud. When it sells, you use that money to offset part of the new toolbox purchase, and justify the rest of the money that's missing as the purchase price of the new "top box" that your wife has just noticed is in the garage.

You've managed to sidestep all the HF top box purchase angst, and all is well with the world.

HF knowing all this is going on, doesn't discount the top boxes, as they know they'll sell almost none anyway.

I don't know if they still have it or not but they used to have a hf insiders club or somthing of that nature that had a small annual fee. I had a freind that was in it and he would get some pretty crazy coupons. Like once a week they would put out some crazy deals but they were only good for like 4 hours. He got one one day for a5000#winch he called me because he knew i was looking at them as coincidence would have it i had literally just got home from purchasing a 3500. We took it back and got the 5000 for like 10-20$cheaper with his super coupon

Yep they still have that I never have been part of it nor do I know anyone who has but they still have it. I always see the tags for it throughout the store on the items on sale.

Care Zero about the Snap-on vs General branding.. I've got 5 of these lowers and a number of uppers, pretty good for what you pay for them.

I will say that on my oldest lowers, the castor plastic degraded and essentially came apart (they're probably 15 years old and have been stored in a hot environment).

I bought one a couple of months ago, 44 black bottom box, used the 25% off coupon, so a few pennies over $400 out the door. I have it setup in my office, as a wiring harness toolbox, works great for that purpose and stores all of my supplies.
