What are the issues with the black one. They have stacks of them in my HF store

I bought the black one first because I worked in a large shop at the time & wanted something easy to push around. After a year or so the detents got really weak & the drawers started to roll out when I moved it. It also wanders to the side when you push it-probably due to 4 swivel casters. I ended up getting the 5 drawer because of the drawer latches & found out it rolls much easier with 2 fixed casters & bigger wheels. One drawback to that is parking it but I'll take that. The deeper top section & added drawer depth make it much more versatile too. I wouldn't worry about the detents in a home environment though.
Op get whatever suits your needs. I spent 2 or 3 years looking for that magical used snap on & anything that came up was gone in a day. Those were still at least a grand so While still a good deal I don't think that's in the same league as $350.

Putting all of the anti HF bias/trolling aside, I happily own 2 of the HF 56 inch boxes. I would have bought 2 of the 72 inch version, had they been available at the time. These are very high quality boxes, in both materials and construction. They compare quite favorably to the pro level SO, Mac and Craftsman boxes I've owned in the past. I'm currently watching for their 56 inch top boxes to go on sale, so I can pick up a couple of them.

I no longer turn wrenches for anyone but myself, so I'm the only one I care to impress. I certainly don't need anyone's approval to spend what has proven to be money very well spent. Advice to the OP....It's your garage, your choices and your money. Don't let anyone try to dictate what you do with any of the three. You are the only one who knows what your needs are.

I wish there was a menards out this way. not necessarily for tool boxes but just as an alternative to Depot and Lowes.

I was really fortunate to get my SO boxes for free. I actually had been eying the HF 26" stack when I got them but they enabled me to run a few more years without laying out money for a toolbox.

Which reminds me of a question I may or may not have asked here before. I still have my dads ANCIENT SO roller cabinet. Cast iron wheels, rounded corners, 2 drawers that don't utilize slides. It's a conversation piece more than a "work out of it every day" box. But here's the interesting thing. The top chest is a rather nice Walden Worcester box.

Walden Worcester was a MAJOR manufacturer of tools here in Massachusetts many years ago and I believe they were the first to patent a racheting wrench. There's plenty of history and documentation on Walden Worcester and Walden wrenches but no mention anywhere of a Walden Worcester tool chest. Even the guys at Alloyartifacts.com had never heard of one. I'm thinking I may have one very rare antique (I'm guessing 70 to 90 YO) tool chest on my hands. Do any of you guys know anything about Walden Worcester tool chests?

Well, I got back from Hershey today and took a spin down to the local HF and got the boxes and used the coupon for the roller. Both pieces were nicely packed on skids and they loaded the roller into my truck with a forklift. I uncrated it at home and it was perfect, no dings, chips or nicks. Like I previously mentioned, it included drawer liners so every time I open a drawer, I can get a snoot full of Au de Freight.

I started out wit the garage heat running as we were experiencing cold rain up here Sunday. Despite my best efforts, I was actually running out of drawers in the new setup because I was organizing better and wasn't trying to cram too much in each drawer.
I was considering taking the side car off my Snap On box and hanging on the new HF but shiny and new got the better of me and I headed back to HF today and bought the sidecar that matches the new 44 inch box.

I'm pretty much all set now for tool storage, and the old box is just about empty. It's almost time to roll the old one out and roll the new one in. The old one is going on CL today.

You should have no issues with them, they work well. I bought the bottom one about 5 years ago,use it as my roll cart at work. It's loaded up, has been excellent. Money well spent IMO. Roll carts are too small for what I like to have with me, I hate walking back and forth to get the tools I don't have. My 56" box is stationary and has the big tools in it. Both have been just fine.

If I hadn't of inherited my grandpa's SO boxes I would probably be buying new HF boxes. I see them every time I am in there and they call to me....the price is great and they look sturdy.

I'm just a DIY's and not a pro, just maintain personal vehicles and such.

ETA: This weekend I started organizing my tools, tossing the junk, etc and feel like the 3 boxes I have are not big enough, so I may still be looking at HF soon.

I'm looking to get the 44" bottom chest soon, especially since it's on special.

Can anyone confirm that the chest itself is 44", or does that include the handle on the side in the measurement?

^ ^ ^ Black one is the lesser of the two. It has 4 drawers and not quite as heavy duty as the red one that is 5 drawer. Red tool cart with 5 drawers is great buy at $169 or so.

See the HF coupon thread as GJ member LeftyZ has done great job to post coupons in the database he created . . . . . see www.hfqpdb.com

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85668

Back to the 44" roller toolbox . . . . $349 for the bottom and $289 for the top.
isn't the top till on the red one deeper?
I had a Blue point , black one, and the top till was not deep enough to stand my impact sockets up in.
I was disappointed with it.
Other fellow got him the red one from HF, and at that point, I wished that was what I had gotten.
Id say if you do get the black one, make sure the top till is going to be deep enough for you.
