You may recall that back in early September, I picked up four of the HF 13-drawer boxes, to use in building a workbench for my shop.

In the last two weeks, I have begun to work on the benches for them.

This is an “artists rendering” of what the front of the benches will look like when finished:

Here is a top-view of the benches without the surface, showing the frame and tool boxes:

And finally, here is some progress on real stuff:

I bought some surplus commercial office interior doors (1-3/4” thick, solid particle board core) and cut them into slabs for my bench-top surface.

And I had some 12ga sheet metal folded up for the caps on the bench tops:

And then today, I made up a jig to weld up the bench legs, and started welding:

I have some square-tube threaded leveling foot inserts on order, along with some adjustable feet. These will get installed after the welding is done and the frame is painted.

I won’t be able to weld the upper and lower horizontals or tool box supports in until I haul them up to my shop in Idaho, because they will be too bulky to transport once built.
I have two weeks planned in November to haul a load up there and build the benches, paint them, install the tool boxes, tops, etc.

Stay tuned for phase 3.

I've been waiting to see more progress on this...I'm pleased to see you start on these. I know how life tends to get in the way of some of the fun things we'd like to do.

I'm slowly getting started on my garage. I had to stop and paint part of the house this weekend, instead of getting much done in the garage.

Anyway, between the benches and the blasting cabinet, looks like you've been busy lately.

Look forward to seeing it finished. I've got one of these and remain pleasantly surprised. I like your concept/rendering so much, I might have to go HF coupon diving and pick up a few more.

Life and money both slow me down. Besides home repairs and maintenance and taking care of vehicles and all the other stuff, I do everything on a cash purchase basis and sometimes have to wait for my available funds to catch up with my projects. Then I go and do dumb stuff like last weekend when I spent $600 on tools at an auction, and spent an entire day driving to bring them home. Cost in time is substantial, as I bought myself more projects to work on and more stuff to be in my way until I deal with it.

Man do I know that one! If you are like me you had plenty of time to sit and think on the way home, what have I done. Now I've got to do this and that and this and that. I spent all that money when I couldn't got that instead.

Been there and done that!

That's what makes us who we are I guess.

Great idea! I am interested in doing a bench like yours but have a couple questions. How wide and tall is the area for the box? I can't quite make it out on the drawings you show on top of the thread. Thanks!

This. I did this once in the current workbench project and I learned I better back off before I drive myself crazy, broke and nothing ends up done. Focus! :lol_hitti

I have posted lots of tool threads in the tools section showing a lot of what I picked up and cleaned up from the most recent auction. So far, I have come close to breaking even by selling off items I don't need on eBay, leaving me with some good stuff at no cost.

As for the workbench project, hold on to your hats, because I have everything loaded in my trailer and will be headed to Idaho for the last two weeks of Nov. when I will be building the tool box work benches in my shop there. I will try to post daily as things progress on that project.
