I recently acquired a "custom" tilt bed HF trailer with the idea of fixing it up and giving it to my son. After much dismantling, cutting, grinding and scraping I finally had a foundation from which to begin. I started by welding all of the joints which got rid of the flexing then from my scrap pile I fabricated the sides, tailgate and latches. I used a custom blend of carefully aged 10w 30 engine oil and 75 90 gear oil to seal the plywood deck. I lucked out at the paint store as they had a quart of miss mixed almost black Bar Ox paint for $2.97 (it normally is almost $20.00.) As soon as the paint cures I will install the HF tail light kit and service the bearings.

I have never done this to a trailer, but was considering it when I re-finish the deck and paint on my ATV trailer. Does the oil seep in or does the the surface remain... "oily" to the touch?

After a few days in the sun the oil will have soaked into the wood and the deck is pretty much dry to the touch. I will usually "reseal" the deck once a year or as needed. The deck on my other trailer has been treated this way for years and has no signs of rot or warping.

Thanks for the tip!

My car trailers was sealed that way, not intentionally but you know $hi% happens. The deck will dry to the touch, but if you lay on it or put something absorbent on it it will seep back out onto your your stuff, especially on hot days.
