ultimately i choose the 44" box, one more on the way. the legs are from global industrial, with a built in outlet option on one of the legs (outlet has 2 receptacles in front of the leg and 2 in the back of the leg). 30" depth, adjustable to 36" high.

i doubled up 3/4 mdf for the top and fastened an 8" backsplash. i removed the stock 5" casters from the box and went with a smaller 3.5" version that saved a total of 2" in height. so the top of the worksurface is 39.5" which is just about perfect for me at 5'11".

i made my own massive leveling feet. 6 hockey pucks and some stainless steel carriage bolts, fender washers and nuts. they came out great, have a huge amount of adjustability and just the right amount of "cush".

not sure what i am going to do above the bench, but the space is definately calling for some "fast car art".

as far as vices go, i have a wilton "universal turret" pattern makers vice, but not sure i want to mount this in the garage or basement. i am pretty sure the vice is meant to be mounted under the work surface, so i may be interested in trading someone for a "regular" big, USA made bench vise. (if anyone local is interested let me know)

to the left of the workbench i plan on putting either a 36" or 48" sandusky lee cabinet in red. for chemicals and car care products, etc.

i would like to extend a thank you to the members here for a multitude of knowlege and ingenuity in pioneering some versions of this bench before me.

sorry for the shameful cell phone pic, time got away from me so i had to rush. more to come.

thanks guys! the top is only fastened to the legs. like steevo and jeepsrbetter, this allows the boxes to remain free of any torture the top takes.

great craftsmanship on your build as well jeepsrbetter.

Nice job mtesh! I like those legs...are they 30 inches deep? Does anyone know of workbench legs that are 20-24 inches deep?

Thanks,
Robert

thanks robert. the legs are from global industrial. really reasonably priced, $25 a piece. i think they make legs that are not as deep. if they dont you may be able to lop of the front and back of the top rail as they project beyond the front and back of the legs. i measured mine and without these "3 inch little projections" the legs are 24" deep. i would try global industrial to see if they stock legs that are not as deep, though. good luck.

I don't like those.

I really like these:

http://www.planomolding.com/product.php?BCCID=131&PID=937

I have three now, Buy then as I need them. you can carry to whole bunch of small stuff to the job or in the car/truck/trailer. Build some kind of a rack for them I you want them over the workbench.

Very nice workbench!

winner, winner, chicken dinner. that will do the trick, portable and probably alot more stout than the rinky dink little cabinet. i think i can get away with 2 to start. thanks for the input.

glad you like the bench, its a fun project. picking up another HF 44 box tomorrow.
