This is a first impressions take, not an official review. I will start by saying that I returned the 44" cabinet after 3 days due to issues with two of the drawers.

On initial box opening of the 26" set, I noticed that the lid on the chest was stuck shut. When I opened it, it cracked the paint on the front top edge where the lid meets the box. It seemed as if it had been compressed or something and now I feel it must be touched up or will rust prematurely. Other than that and the fact that the 3 small top drawers appear to sag towards the middle, it is fairly well built and adequate for storage.

With the bottom cabinet, I initially noticed that the welds near the bottom front corners of the unit seemed bowed on both sides. On one side, it appears that there was a gap where it is supposed to be spot welded together (see pic). I don't think it will impact structural integrity since I plan on only using as a home/DIY guy, but I wasn't impressed. The paint was also cracking there. Also, where the bottom of the cabinet has the caster bolt inserts, one of the recessed areas was misshaped and required me using a tap/die to fix and secure the caster.

Overall, the color is more dull than the 44" box. The metal is obviously not as thick. The casters are decent (better than HD/Lowes stuff for most part), but aren't on same par as 44" cabinet. I think the drawers are reasonably smooth with average weight capacity. It fits nicely in the small area I have it, and I hope it will last a good 10+ years. I do feel it was a step down from the 44" but that was basically overkill for me at this point. I would have considered a better 26" if there was anything else in price range comparable. I went and checked out the Kobalts, but even the black, 4 drawer bottom with intermediate and top box was more $ and felt like it had crappy plastic drawer sliders. I'm perplexed and probably a bit of a perfectionist, so I don't know if any 26" box will make me happy. Just my .02, thanks for looking.

Derek

I feel like a psycho taking a second one back... It looked to me like this one might be a previous return, but can't be sure. The QC just seemed to be lacking.

I have the same box, it's great, and mine doesn't suffer from any of the issues yours has. I'd honestly take it back and get a new one, and this time inspect it before you walk out of the store.

well, I saved the cardboard boxes. I will box the units back up (probably not the lower unit since has casters... and take it back. I will be ultimate **** customer and do that. I really don't care what they think. I paid $350 so want something that looks good out of the gates. I was starting to question the QC on these, and maybe I will just straight up say I want money back unless you unbox it in front of me. I'm not sure if it would be any better with Craftsman or Kobalt though. One thing I've noticed similar to automotive industry is that American made items seem to have much better paint jobs than Chinese counterparts regardless of mechanical quality.

Andrew, how long have you had your 26" box and how is it used?

edit... I should have stated that American products in general have much better paint jobs than their Asian counterparts. I have noticed this across a range of industries.

I would take it back without question. They should be the ones left with a weird feeling that they sold you 2 boxes with manufacturers defects

I have that set first one I brought home bottom in great shape top was in good shape too. Just 1 little problem the keys for the top box were in the box and somehow the box got locked with the keys in it. second set was perfect and they still look like new have had them for 2 yrs. Oh ya managers solution too the key problem he was gonna give me a bi metal hole cutter to cut the lock out un believable.

Because your craftsman was probably not made in the usa.... Starting **** for the sake of starting **** is silly. Comparing a us general paint job to a krl is no contest but the price difference is staggering.

I actually got mine from a friend who used it daily at muffler shop for 8 months or so then I bought it from him when he switched careers and I've had it for 4-5 months now, other than a scratch down the side from another guy running his box into it it looks brand new and works just as well. I really like it, I'd say it gets moderate to heavy use in my garage as I work on quite a few cars every month. The only thing I don't do is roll it around very much but other than that the drawers still slide smoothly without any issues and the top still springs open on its own. As far as I'm concerned it's a great box and has stood up to quite a bit of use.

Here's the most important question: does it hold tools?

I think you might be setting your expectations a bit too high for this price range (not that these are cheap but they're comparatively cheap). There was a guy here yesterday that bought a viper box that had some moderate cosmetic issues and he was happier than a pitbull eating a block a cheese with the deal he got (around 400 bucks).

These boxes are much cheaper at harbor freight and obviously they cut some corners when building them but they still do their job; they hold tools. If you feel cheated you should probably take it back for your money back but I don't think you're really going to find one without something that bothers you because most of harbor freight's stuff is going to have some kind of cosmetic or minor build defect because that's harbor freight; it's their thing: chinese stuff for cheap. It's probably because of their shipping method (boat), the thickness of the cardboard they use, and how they pack their boxes.

People seem happy with these boxes but I'm not sure if they have the same kind of significant issues as the boxes you've encountered; they might just ignore them because coupon! :shocking:

I don't think you can imagine how far you need to go to be the "ultimate ****" customer at HF, its way way beyond returning a defective product.

Anything big or heavy I would check out in the parking lot before taking it home.

I agree 100%. Mine also has none of these issues. If it did, I would take it back.

really?

i just asked a question related to someone making a blanket statement about how import items have worse paint than us made items.

fact #1, my craftsman stack is us made

fact #2, my hf cabinet has better paint even if it is the rough finish

fact #3, i own both items and that puts me in situation to be able to do an actual hands on long term assessment rather than just a biased opinion

fact# 4, no one has made the leap to compare the krl to to the hf or the craftsman. well except you

the op politely responded to me and i thank him. i think the question was relevant because the two boxes are of a similar size and in a similar price range.

the one starting the **** is the one who made assumptions and brought snap-on into the conversation when no one else had.

i will quit feeding the trolls now...........

Thanks for the advice and the coupon link very much. And to anyone wondering, my blanket statements are based upon experience with the automotive, industrial, and consumer markets. I'm also comparing the craftsman boxes I've had and still do have to what I see here, so no less of an informed opinion than anyone else's.

Ditto.

The first one I bought, I got it home and inside the box it was smashed in though. The replacement is MINT.

You won't find a nicer box for the money, and it's nicer than boxes 3-4x its price.

I sold a US made Craftsman 3 tier 26" box and a Snap On bottom chest to buy a 44" HF top bottom and 2 lockers and I am much happier in all aspects.

I wish they sold the 26" tops and bottoms separately. I'd like a bottom

Yeah, the 44" is nice too if you have the room. I took the 26" setup in today to exchange for one without the blemishes and opened the boxes before leaving the store. This set had none of the issues my other box did and is near-mint. I will say that when the lid closes on the top chest, it is off by a few millimeters to one side, the welded joint at the top back of the box lid could be a bit better, and that right before fully opening it the three bars that run down to unlock drawers make a slight noise, but that is some serious nitpicking. Thanks to "upgrading" for sending the coupon link, was able to get $70 back that was used on some deep well sockets and specialty pliers.

I am glad you took it back and that you got a much better, if not perfect, unit.

You just got to look it over real good before buying it. Well that goes for anything from HF. QC is little to none with HF. My HF service cart has lots of paint blemishes, that I didnt notice in the store. I should of looked it over better.
