Hey everyone. After many years, I have finally outgrown my Gen1 HF 44" tool chest. However, as you all know, HF is no longer selling Gen1 boxes. I could simply purchase a Gen2 box to meet my needs, but I am worried about the extra 4" depth when I place the 2 boxes next to each other. Does anyone have this setup? I am starting to think that I should sell my Gen1 box and buy a new Gen 2 box, but it would seem like a hassle to sell and a waste because the Gen1 box has served me so well. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I would keep the 44 and buy whichever the next bigger size you can afford. I currently have a 56 and 72 bottom chest. I'll be adding a side chest at some point.

It really comes down to OCD for me, can you stand looking at the difference forever.
I had to add an addition to the right side of my shop after adding one to the left because the wife could not accept the imbalance. Funny how some people are built.

The extra 4" is nice (thats what she said) but the OCD can be relieved by placing Gen 1 further away from the wall and installing a work surface or upper tool chest.

This is a good idea. I have not thought about this. However I am still SOL for the upper chest because the Gen2s will not fit without sticking out 4".

I am pretty OCD about stuff and I am trying to imagine this scenario of having 4" of a chest sticking out. 4" is quite a bit and very noticeable.

I am the same way. The idea of making the bench top is excellent. Seeing the difference is one thing but KNOWING they are different sizes is a whole other level of OCD. This would be the back-and-forth discussion I would have with myself in my puny head.

If adding a top add ply in bottom box recess to make level with lip and have the 4" overhang to the rear .
If you keep you box against a wall and don't move it you will never know .
If you like 18" depth keep eye out for used ones, if think you like 22" then consider selling yours and buy new ones via coupons

Basically this. If put both both next to each other than make 2 equal sized tops to put on each one. I have 4 gen1 with work tops 24in deep. 2in in front and 4in in back. When push against wall fronts should all line up.

I would get the newer one. Sell the old one. If for nothing else than having 4 inches more storage depth.

I have about a 4” to 6” tall footing around the inside of my garage. When I bought my 22”
Gen II boxes to put beside my 18” Craftsman boxes, I moved the rear casters on the Gen II’s in a few inches so that the boxes would go flush up against the sheetrock walls,
and not against the footing at the bottom. In other words, the 18” Craftsman’s sit in front of the footing, and the Gen II’s above the footing. Now the Gen II’s sit almost flush with the Craftsman’s. The Craftsman's have top boxes and being away from the wall a little allows the top lids to open and also hide the rear gap. I don't have top boxes on the Gen II’s, plus being that close to the wall would probably obstruct the top lids from opening if I did have top boxes. Also, I don’t move my boxes, so moving the rear casters isn’t a stability issue for me.

You know it is Christmas and you have worked really hard all year. If it were me I would buy 2 new boxes and make someone a deal on my old one.
We deserve it.

Why don't you cut out the drywall and reframe the studs so the deeper one pushes back into the wall and is flush with the older one.

Sell it and buy a matching Gen 2 44" set. You have more color choices if you want to try a different color.
