HF Utility trailer

I'm planning on moving some dirt from a bank in the front to the back and I would rather not wheel barrow it. I'm thinking of getting the small HF trailer to pull behind my riding mower.
It's relatively cheap at $125 and since it is a "trailer" a 20% coupon can't be used on it.
Does anyone recall if it ever goes on sale? I'm in no hurry.

In factoring in the cost you will need to buy the bolts and plywood for the floor. Not a lot of cost but I saw one today on craig's list for $150 that was complete with flooring and sides.
I have not seen then advertised lower at HF.

This isn't one of the trailers that fold up or guys are using for the foundation of a "box" trailer.
This is HF #38897 called a "utility trailer" none the less as a trailer it's not eligible for a 20% coupon.

Have you checked Sears or Home Depot (or Craigslist) for a trailer that can be pulled behind tractor/ riding mower??

Find a cheap or free pop up/tent camper and make one to your needs.

Why not a dump trailer for a tractor? I mean if you got one.

Honestly a wheel barrow works quite well. Moved 10 tons of soil that way more than a few times.

If it comes with the flat u-bolt plates replace them with ones that are properly broken (ie in a brake).

I'm not even kidding. Don't even try to run it with the provided plates if they're just flat bar with 4 holes.

Seriously.

Really.

Garbage. Fix it. You'll NEVER get any significant torque on the u-bolts with a plate that just keeps deflecting.

Look at the rear of ANY fullsize truck for inspiration.

Don't ask.
If this it the one you are considering I'd check and see if they really consider it as a trailer.

BTW: It's pretty easy to find similar ones for sale used. Most brands are similar and they don't hold up well if used for heavy loads (any brand). When moving dirt be prepared to either spread it or shovel off the cart. They don't tilt enough to actually dump.

If you buy one - before you use it reinforce the sides of the tongue
. It takes very little weight to overload it and the tongue will bend. Don't ask how I know. I have the same garden trailer as the above link. Got it free on CL, it is ok for what the purpose is, just fix the tongue!!!

You could probably hire a neighbor kid to push your wheelbarrow for a lot less than the cost of that HF trailer. ;) For that matter it shouldn't be that hard to figure out how to build a bracket of some sort to hook the wheelbarrow to the back of your tractor.

As others have said especially given that you aren't in a hurry I would keep my eyes open on CL.

But also keep in mind that all dump trailers are not created equally. It seems the older they are, assuming they are in good shape the better they are. I picked up essentially a brand new one off CL for $50. It was not nearly as solid as my father's Agri-Fab that he had for years but said wth it'll fine for my needs.

Well, shortly after using it it started flexing and literally falling apart. I bent the **** out of it one time trying to dump with it and decided I had enough of the POS. I fixed the dents with a hammer and block of wood and threw it up on CL for $60 figuring I would try and get my money back. A guy came looked at it handed me 60 bucks and said it would be perfect for him. I told him it was flimsy but he didnt seem to concerned. So I made $10 on that somehow after destroying it and kept my eyes out for a more solid one. Sure enough a solid Agri-Fab popped up looked mint and I got it for $75 and was a happy camper. It is so much more heavy duty than the other POS I had.

Moral of the story keep your eyes open on CL but be sure to get one that feels solid. If it feels flimsy it is and it wont last. I dont know the quality of the HF one, maybe it is fine but there are deals to be had on CL so if youre patient you'll find one that fits your needs. Oh and a utility trailer is way better than using a wheelbarrow.

If Harbor Freight won't let you use the coupon then try this

I'd go get this one at Home Depot

http://www.homedepot.com/p/AllFitHD-9-cu-ft-Steel-Dump-Cart-AF-350S/203677465

Take a 20% off or 25% off coupon from harbor freight with you. Usually home depot will accept it as a competitors coupon. But their policy is kinda vague on this so YMMV be very polite to the cashier and if they don't want to honor it, walk away and try again another time with a different cashier or at a different store.

I got one for free somewhere along the line. At one time nearly every big box store was giving them away if you bought a lawn tractor. I used it to haul dirt and rock when I dug out for my patio. The wheels broke at the hub bearings. I rewelded them and in the process got the bearings too hot. Ended up putting new 'heavy duty' wheels on it from TSC and it's been fine since.

The trailer is ok for light stuff but the tubes are junk . I replaced the tires and wheels with hard rubber wagon wheels which H/F also sells. The axle is 5/8 inch . You will have to shim the wheels on the axle .
