HF vs Amazon (shipping)

Just recently I ordered some things from both HF and Amazon. Both have good deals and decent stuff available, but when it comes to shipping and packaging methods there was a big difference.

HF order was :
10 bar clamps (18-24")
backsaw
inexpensive chisel set
framing hammer
horizontal bench clamp
wallboard saw

Amazon order:
1000 staples
high tension hacksaw
backsaw
circular saw blades
chainsaw tuneup kit

The HF order came in one large box (about twice the size it needed to be) filled with loose merchandise and some bubble packs. You can imagine what 10 bar clamps rattling around did to those. The tape was barely holding the box shut, 3 clamp bars were hanging out of the box a good 4" in various places. No additional protection for anything. On the bright side, nothing was damaged. The box was left at the gate at the end of my driveway and I found a packing slip containing the contents falling out of the mangled box.

The Amazon order arrived same day in 2 separate smaller boxes. Nothing had room to shuffle around in their boxes, saws were kept nice and flat. Circular saw blades being just a film over cardboard package was wrapped in several snug layers of bubble wrap.

Just thought I'd share my experiences with their shipping/packaging methods. Both vendors got the products here on time and they survived, but I'd have to say Amazon went the extra mile to get things here in one piece.

Amazon knows how to ship products. I've ordered a lot of things from major online retailers and the packaging is just retarded. Like a small delicate product sitting way at the bottom of a way too big box and then tons of packing material on top of it. So the item was subjected to forces when it was shifted about or moved from one platform or truck to another. They spend a lot of extra money on packaging and a way too large box and then pack it wrong.

Amazon can be hit and miss, too.

I ordered four combo wrenches from Amazon about a month ago. The box was two feet long, 18 inches wide, and a foot tall. Rattling around with the wrenches were two air-filled pouches the size of my fist.

Never gotten an order shipped from HF, so I can't say anything about them.

Yep, HF reminds me of JCWhitney of old. Take a huge box, fill it with peanuts and throw in a couple tiny items.

JC Whitney....Now that's bringing back some memories. All of which are bad. I ordered a pair of struts for a car from them maybe 25 years ago. Order arrived. One outer shipping box that contained two factory strut boxes taped together. No holes in the outer box or anything. One of the factory strut boxes inside was completely empty. No strut inside. Now, don't you think the person packaging up the order would have realized that one of the strut boxes was empty? Two identical items. One weighs what must be 5 pounds, the other weighs almost nothing. I guess not. Maybe they had the same car and needed one strut?
