Today I was looking around the local HF today and noticed a new welding cabinet/cart. I like the idea of keeping welding supplies/hood/gloves/pliers/etc. with the welder and covered. It looked decent and I was wondering if anyone else has seen it or purchased it.

Cool idea and it looks interesting but not sure about the $229.99 price tag. It'll take lots of discount and 25% off before I'd consider it.

I like the idea of closed storage for tips, loose tools, etc, but the price is about the same as other closed cabinet welding carts and I'm not terribly impressed. It would have to be $100, or $79 on sale at HF before I consider it.

I have one that is very similar and I like it. I paid about $180 for it at Princess Auto. I think Northern Tool carries the same one.

It doesn't show in this photo but I added a tool box folding side table to it which is quite handy. I have a few welding helmets and fortunately the one I use most, a Lincoln, fits nicely in the bottom drawer (some don't).

HF has an open cart on sale from time to time for about $39. I have one of those and it really is pretty sturdy. I do like the one you show, just not THAT ($$$) much.

I'd sooner build something like that off of one of those HF 7 drawer end cabinets. Currently my welder is sitting on the cheap HF cart, works well enough for what it is.

I agree that drawers are very useful around a MIG welder. I bought a small drawer unit intended to go between seats in a van as part of commercial van shelving. I designed my small MIG cart around it. I keep tips, nozzles, soapstones, nozzle reamers, hand wire brushes, small tri-square, center punch, small sharp chisel (for spatter removal), rolls of wire, spare welding gloves, chipping hammers and more in mine. But mine has a shallow drawer on top - you don't need a deep drawer for tips or nozzles - and it's a high quality unit with ball bearing slides. I paid $60 for it used. The rest of the cart I built with stuff I had lying around my shop. It's sized for a small welder like the one shown on the HF cart (although mine is a Lincoln SP-175).

Mine also has a T-frame behind the tank, which the chain attaches to, and it has a strong handle at the other end of the cart, designed so I can wind up the leads neatly on it. The T-frame and handle work together also, as two guys can easily pick up the whole cart and carry it up flights of stairs. That's a key feature for any fabricator who has to work on steel stairways. It's completely lacking on the Chinese design shown.

I don't have any comment on the price except to say I wouldn't ever pay anything like that. The little blue HF MIG carts for $39 are a reasonable deal to get started with but you have to treat them like a kit. The casters are junk and need replacing, and you have to build a spacer to hold the tank far enough away from the cart deck to allow the gas hose to come out of the back of the welder (duh). But once you've done those things they're a reasonable thing to get you going.

Build your own MIG cart. Find a top quality small drawer unit if you want drawers.

Here's the one I was thinking of when I mentioned "Northern Tools + Industrial" above. It's currently on sale for $190. (vs. $220 reg.)

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200395734_200395734

I have the one from Northern that I got several years back. I like it, but the cheap plastic rear wheels and skinny axle seem kind of wimpy for the weight of a cylinder, welder, and misc other stuff. They haven't broke on me yet, but I expect some day they will.

kyrbz - I laughed a bit when I saw yours. You appear to be a "blue" welder guy while I am a "red" guy. Even when you open your drawers I see blue inside. When I open mine I see red.

A few things I did with mine were that I installed both cable hooks on the same side. I found it easier to hang the cables plus it freed up the other side for a folding tool box tray ... red of course.

I have some large Lincoln stickers that I plan to put on the bottom of the box. I suspect you'll eventually go for the "blue" ones.

p.s. - I hear you on the wheels. I plan to replace mine.

Same here. I have the HF cart and I replaced all the hardware with 1/4-20 (by the pound at Tractor Supply - cheap!) stuff and replaced the two front casters. Works great. I like the drawer design, but not that $$$.

That folding tool tray is a nice addition.

I checked the new cart out at the store today and was pleasantly surprised. It's built like their red toolboxes and is way sturdier than the $39 welding cart.

I too looked at the unit over the weekend and... wasn't impressed. Not $200 impressed, at least. The top drawer is only half depth- no idea why. There's nothing blocking the space, but it's only about 10" deep. Weird.

The other trays are fine. The bottom isn't a tray, but a flip up door instead- I'd rather have it be another drawer, honestly. Getting anything in or out of that space will require you to get on your hands and knees to reach back inside. That is one awkward setup.

$99? Yeah, I'd find a use for it, perhaps for a spare welder. But $200? No thanks.

Adding drawer / cabinets is a great idea. I have a spare drawer unit that would fit on my current cart and replace the plastic bin that is there now that keeps overflowing with grinding disks and other items. I would love to have a dedicated drawer just for MIG tips, spatter paste, tools, etc. Time to get out one of the drawer units, clean and paint it for service.

Its a bit overpriced for what you get, much like the portable welding table they have for sale now too.

I am hoping it will come down in price by next year.

The welding 'table' is not something I could recommend to anyone. It's very lightly built and pivots in the middle with no locking mechanism. It's short to work on and I'd need to add extension legs to get it to a working height. I looked, was curious, decided what I have works better for my needs.

i saw it in store today on sale for 129. they also had a welding table that looked decent for 42 bucks (on sale from 199??) strange.

i have my welder mounted on a blue point roll cart. it has one drawer i keep my small stuff in. clamps and heavy stuff in the bottom. does the trick, but that new cart they have is compact with near the same storage. cant justify spending the money for no reason. :)

nice to see hf at least trying.

I picked one up yesterday. First saw them a few weeks ago, the $229 price was ridiculous. But I just saw the sale price ($129) earlier this week. Thought about it a few days & decided for that price it wasn't worth trying to build one myself.

The clerk told me that if I can find a coupon for 20% off they will refund the difference!

Hoping to assemble it tomorrow.

Just picked this up at the local store and I'm impressed. It was listed in the mail flyer at $129.99, regular $229.99 and with a 25% off coupon it came to $97.49. Not a bad little cart and much better than not having one at all. It is pretty heavy duty at 86lbs. Nice fit and finish. Comes with 2 1/2 drawers on ball bearing slides that feel solid and a small closed cabinet that I wish was another drawer. Decent casters, lots of places to hang stuff and a place for my tank.

velocipede,

I'm glad you posted the info on the use of the coupon. My local store wouldn't let me use the coupon as it was "not applicable to tool boxes." I took a screen copy of your thread entry and went back in this morning. OOPs, they made a mistake and now they have credited me the difference from the $129.99. I posted the pictures of mine in the "in your garage today thread" i actually like this better than trying to make the black three drawer cart into a welding cart.

56vette,
Glad you changed their mind. I just got a super coupon for that black three drawer box....$109.99. I actually went over there with the intention of getting one of the red five drawer carts with a $164.99 coupon, but when I saw how well built the welding cart was I changed my mind.

Can someone who has one of these (item#61705), measure the dimensions of the top platform? I can only find the overall dimensions on the HF website, and won't be able to get to the store until this weekend to put my hands on one (if they even have one in stock).

I need something to put my Miller Econotig on, and it's dimensions are:
H: 18 in (457 mm)
W: 13 in (330 mm)
D: 25-1/2 in (648 mm)

gyromike - The top platform of mine (post #'s 8 & 18) is 13.75" W x 19.75" D. If it helps, the overall height is 32.75".

Thanks PCO6.

It would be wide enough, but about 6" too short.

Looking at the owners manual for it, I may be able to make an extended bottom frame out of angle or square tubing, to accomodate the extra length and set the cabinet section on that.

I could make a simple cart to hold the machine and bottle, but I like the drawers and storage space for the helmet and supplies.

I had a similar issue with HF coupons in the past. I found if you first try to use the coupon online and it works (simply cancel the order) than it works in the store. The cashier can do the same thing they can scan it for everything if works done if it doesn't then not eligable. Store trianing is all.

I bought the cart as well using 25% off the $129. Nice cart heavy duty, it has four hooks two on each side. Nice for hanging everything and then some.

Provided your bottle fits underneath I think you could easily do that. My bottle does and I was thinking of making a longer platform just to store small tools, etc. on while I was using the welder. I ended going with the folding side table though.

Actually, I was thinking about making a new bottom frame that the rear wheels and front casters attach to, with angle or likely square tubing. I would like to use a full-size bottle.

The welder would hang off the top of the cabinet in the rear but that shouldn't be a problem, but I would need to add something back there to secure the bottle rack and chains to anyway, and could support the back of the machine too.

$200 + seems way to high for a welding cart with drawers. Seems to me that you could pick up a used two drawer office file cabinet, slap on some casters, a handle on the front, some metal hooks and a coat of paint and come out way ahead. Just my $0.02
