HF's compression tester

i searched a bit in the HF pass/ fail didn't see it.

Your thoughts on this compared to others?

The price is right, generally compression testings dont have to be 100% accurate, as long as all the other cylinders are matching i think its good.

I dont have a need for this really. I bought a c-man timing light for $50-60 and only used it once. Should of gotten a HF one. I think its the same with this but obviously i can use the compression gauges more.

No idea, but I know they have a cylinder leak-down tester for a little more $$. IMHO a leak down is a much informative test than just pressure.

i have them both, the pressure testor has server me well for 3+yrs no problems. The leakdown testor is kinda junk.

actually the pressure testor i have, i bought at murray/orielys, so it might not be the same manufacture

For years I used an Actron Compression tester with no problems. A couple of weeks ago I did purchase the Matco Compression and Vacuum Gauge set together, and much to my dismay, it looks exactly like the Actron right down to being made in China. Not starting a COO debate because, I am okay/ happy with the price I paid for it (student discount).

c-man's is $65.00 compared to the HF which $26.


normally i would just get the c-man but when i look at my timing gun, i should of gotten the cheaper one.

the pictures look very similiar and i wouldn't be suprised if it came from the same vendors just rebadged or something.

FYI, I have the Sears compression tester and it is made in Taiwan. Also, just as an aside, the price on that compression tester has jumped quite a bit in the past year. Last year it sold online and in most stores for $50. I remember because right when I wanted to buy it all of the stores had raised the price to $65, but it was still $50 online. I bought it online

HF has four compression gauges, two gas, and two diesel, the gas are $10 and $25 with the main feature in the added cost a quick disconnect for the 3 adapter hoses.

HF timing light is junk, this is a case where money is better spent elsewhere. I bought Actron, and in hindsight would have bought higher up the line with digital rpm and advance features. Snapon has a nice unit, but ones I have used have a bug where the rpm or advance is wrong, I forget which.

Are these things junk because they're flimsy and won't survive more than 5 or 10 uses, or are they junk because they're defective and/or inaccurate from the get-go?

Junk that breaks easily might be OK if it's at least accurate the few times it works.

It's actually pretty decently built and the gauge is accurate compared to a buddies SO tester.

Leakdown tester is indeed junk. Compression tester is okay.

i got the $10 compression tester from HF. It's accurate and works good. Looks to be well built to me.
