Looking around CL for a nice pre-owned Hobart Handler 140 or similar and noticed not all the Hobarts look the same.

I'm guessing this design is older:

Is there any difference in performance or build quality between the older design and the current one? The better priced, more local one is the older design.

I have the newer version of the HH140 and I'm pretty happy with mine. The newer version has 5 voltage taps (heat ranges) instead of 4. I'm not positive but they might have changed the wire drive mechanism also, either changed the angle, or added all metal rollers to the wire feed if the older version didn't have that but I'm not sure. I'm a novice welder so I don't know how much more adjustability the extra heat range gives you in the real world. Technique and wire speed will also affect what you use for a heat setting so I don't feel like I can adequately comment on the difference.

Here is my setup.

Used is good if the price I right, I have not heard much bad about the 140. But a new one has a super long warranty and they d continually fuss wit hem to workout bugs from older models in some cases.

Hopefully Montanafordman doesn't mind me using his picture, but when scouring Craigslist you can quickly identify the newer version by looking for the part I've circled here.

I didn't even think about warranties. I'll have to take that into account when looking at used ones, especially considering a new one can be picked up under $500.

I always use lack of warranty as a negotiating point on a used tool. It's a big deal, or can become so anyway.

You can do that but I hang up. I had a guy want to come look at a snowmobile. He made 2 or 3 calls then started in on the price and then went in about it didn't have all the features he liked,,, it said all this in the add, I hung up.

Well I'm pretty reasonable in what I offer/pay for stuff. Sometimes people don't take in to account important factors when pricing, other times they're just nuts.
