I bought an HF 16 speed drill press several years ago. Now it wont take any pressure when drilling, it seems like a clutch is slipping. Very little pressure causes it to slip and make it very difficult to drill anything. The belts up top still spin but the bit and chuck dont. I let on and it spins again. HF customer service is NO help. I hate to throw it away and buy another press. Does anyone know how to fix the issue?
thanks

Loose chuck? If it's a taper chuck all you have to do is bring the quill down on the table and press hard. Or put a rod in it and tap upwards with a hammer. Look up inside before you do this, there may be a screw and you don't want to damage that. Oh, and if there is, see if that is loose.

Belts need to be tight.

Need to determine how the front pulley is attached to the shaft - keyway? set screw?
I would remove the belt and pull off the front pulley.

If the key is what shared, Ace Hardware tends to have this kind of thing. Just clean up things well and put it back together.

Sounds like a key way like mentioned above.should be just remove the pulley and find the sheared piece of key stock.take it to local hardware and match up.

I doubt you sheared the key.

It probably was never there or just slipped out of the pulley from vibration and/or a loose set screw.

Very simple repair.

You guys are the best, thank you! It got me looking in the right direction, my mind was stuck on thinking there was a clutch somewhere slipping. I opened the top(need a short ladder because its the larger 17in press). I looked in and decided to try and remove the pulley with a big MM socket. When i turned it it turns out its reverse thread so i was tightening it and they Whalla it works now just by tightening the nut. You dont know how many times and wasted hours on hold i called HF CS and got no answer other than what i knew it wasn't. Today after 2 hours on hold in 2 separate calls, i was told it was the belts and i knew it wasn't. Completely worthless service. Anyway, is there a key stock in there too? or a set screw? It seems to be working like new again but want to make sure there isn't another thing i need to do to it.
thanks!!!
