Hey! I would suggest you try your best to plan out everything you want in your garage in the long term -- and try to plan for upgrades as best you can as well.
I'm learning this the hard way. Things I changed/modified a couple of years ago are now limiting my ability to upgrade my toolbox and add more storage space, and now I'm going to wind up spending more money still in order to expand. It all depends on your budget though, and sometimes you just do what will work in the moment. I couldn't afford a large toolbox for a while, so I opted for a 26" that quickly became too small to keep organized, and then I sat a 52" next to it. Now the 52" is getting a little cramped for my liking, and I've got nowhere to go because I've got things in place on all sides, and don't want to spend more to tear it down and rebuild.
I suppose the other big thing here is organization. If you keep organized, you won't lose stuff, and you'll save money in the long run. I used a labelmaker with some magnetic strip and clear packing tape over it to make magnetic toolbox labels, they're super useful so that I can find things quickly. Might not be for everyone but personally I find the less I need to remember, the better.
