Sylmar...Where I grew up!
The name means "Sea of trees". That refers to the olive trees. Sylmar during the 1st half of the 20th Century was the World's Capitol of Olives. You would think that would have been somewhere in Greece or Italy. But no! Right here in the San Fernando Valley of SoCal. As Homes in the San Fernando Valley crowded out the olive growers, they moved as a group to Lindsay California, up in the Central Valley. Many of the olive trees got moved to become landscaping for condo complexes, commercial centers, etc. around SoCal. But there are still quite a few around. When I was a kid, the olive processing plants made some pretty awful odors.
Also home to some pretty wild shaking, like the 1971 earthquake which was epicentered in eastern Sylmar.
One of the fancier garages around is known as "San Sylmar". Owned by the Nethercutt family, it includes quite a car collection. Marble floors and columns...custom cast bronze doors...pretty fancy place!
Now I live out in the desert where there aren't so many people (yet!).
So Welcome!
