Have you ever pulled the pump apart on a 2 1/2 ton hf long frame jack?

I did something incredibly retarded, can't blame the jack. It was down, and I always tighten the valve once it comes down (well, except for this last time, apparently).

I couldn't get the valve to "open" (since it already was, DOH!), so...I did what any ***** would do and took some knipex cobras to the knob. (has the round release knob on top of the handle that you turn, not a lever one).

Well, it broke loose...kind of, and I proceeded to "open" the valve. What that really means is, I broke loose the nut or loctite that holds it together inside the pump, and proceeded to unscrew the shaft right out of the pump.

I'm a *****. This really pisses me off, I should have known better, and this jack has worked great for 8 years.

So, do you know of anything special to watch for before I try and tear the pump apart?

It sounds like you just broke the linkage, I'm drawing a blank on the version you have. Did it break inside the unit itself? The last 5 ton I worked on had a outer nut and the release threaded inside it. Snap a pic if you get a chance, doesn't sound to complicated to fix. When you get the release rod unthreaded make sure you determine what type of internal shut off you have, if it's pointed like a needle that's all that should be in there, if it's flat there will be a ball inside.

Edit... It's suppost to thread in and all the way out, it sounds like the linkage bound up as generally they won't thread completely out till you remove the handle.

maybe I completely broke it, then. It's still in the pump, but it you can barely turn it either way before it catches on something. It feels as if it's trying to thread into something, but can't get lined up straight. I'll just have to tear it apart and see what I did. *sigh*

I never liked the feel of the ones with the turner on the end, you do get a bit more control out of em though. It always scares me to break a jack loose with the handle turn ones. did it have anything on the end of the rod after you pulled it out? threads? square drive?
