Hiding peg board

I'm starting to finish the inside of my 24x24 shop. Peg board is a great way for storing stuff. However over time it gets cluttered. I don't really want to do away with it, but would like some ideas on covering it up. I'm currently installing some cabinets in the shop and I'm thinking about building a cabinet to match around it. What do you guys think?

You have half as much pegboard as you need.

Some people put pegboard inside the cabinet. Others put pegboard panel inserts in the cabinet doors. You can use both sides of the pegboard on the doors.

I have never cared for peg board, I always like useing 1/2 or 5/8 plywood for back boards to hang things on, and use screws, nails, or wood doll pin for hangers. it is cheaper then all the peg board hooks. I used 1/2 inch plywood on this work bench.

For me, I guess it's like salt -- a little is great. (Although I have to admit that I do like that all-pegboard approach.)

I did a thing where I painted it, in two different colors, with the understanding that I would only put tools on the stuff inside the box. I honestly don't remember why I decided to do it that way, but it looks a little less random.

I put the pegboard inside a metal box that closes, kind of like you're talking about. In actual use, I don't know that I've ever bothered to close it, though.

I like some stuff out -- but most stuff inside cabinets. You can see on the right that I also sometimes just hang tools on wood, like Chief Ben talks about.

Your garage is organized and neat. Have those metal boxes works good if you do need more space and gives the appearance of a neater shop. Well done sir.

I plan to make a larger pegboard to hold spanners and other everyday things. ATM I only have the basics displayed. I like the black pegboard too - a nice contrast

Anybody ever think of pegboard on the walls (floor to ceiling) and sliding doors to cover it?

I've run large swaths of pegboard in my garage. It's not floor to ceiling but floor to about 6 ft or so.

In general I've really liked it a lot and it has proven a lot more space efficient than a big bulky tool chest. That said, the key is the hook system. I can't stand the standard hooks that pull out of the peg board when you grab a tool. I'd HIGHLY recommend the Triton Durahook system. Locks in the hooks so they're rock solid Well worth it.

I'm of the don't hide it school. It is what it is. I suppose one could paint it or stain it, however.

I'm trying to see the value of peg board, but the advantages of a toolbox would seem (to me) outweight it. The box holds (way) more, takes up little room, and can be moved over to the job at ahnd. I guess if you used few tools and everything was done at a bench, then it would be the right answer. I did buy a kit for my attached 2-car garage, where I was going to put tools that I often need for home repairs and don't want to have to run out to the shop to get them!

I like the quck access to tools that pegboard provides. I don't hang all of my tools on it, only the ones that are commonly needed to do quick jobs. The tools that hang on mine are various pliers, cheap screwdrivers, clamps, vice grips, tin snips, wire cutters, goggles and cresent wrench. None of these are very expensive since this is also the first place the wife and kids go if they need these tools.

The more expensive tools get locked up in my box.

I like plane pegboard. It reminds me of my Grandfather's garage. Same reason I like stained floors and scrap wood benches.

wow, thats a neat wall!
I think when i found a house for me, i have to go for the same idea...
But i think it would be better, when the workbench would be longer about 15FT!

If you noticed Jack used peg board sparingly and painted to match the wall color. I think that the approach will work for your needs.

My peg board was not hidden but made into wall art.

Yeah, the cream-colored pegboard on my wall is mostly a way to cover up some mismatched wall coverings underneath it. But with those colors, I thought it gives the area above the bench a retro, 1950's kind of look.

I think pegboard is great for that handful of tools that you use for just about every project. At least in my case, if I kept them in the toolbox I think I'd end up just leaving them sitting out rather than going back and sliding open a drawer every time I needed a pair of pliers or a screwdriver.

There's a point to it, I was looking at it this way:

  • My garage is small an narrow (about 9 - 9.5 ft wide of usable work space, see below).

  • There's no point in having a tool chest to roll over to the work station because the garage is so small it IS the work station.

  • A tool chest would have about a 18" x 30 - 36"+ foot print. That takes up a lot of space in my garage. Vs. just hanging things on the wall and not taking up floor space.

  • Bulky or long items can be hung on the peg board where they wouldn't fit in a tool box.

  • Finally, everything is "there" on the wall in plain sight and easy to reach. No digging through and openning and closing drawers.

If I had a larger garage (drool) then I'd have gone with a different option. And certainly, I'd have gone with a different option if this was a commercial garage where there are people coming and going throughout the day. But this is just my personal garage attached to my house. If figure if someone breaks in, to the house, a lock on the tool box won't stop them from steeling my tools.

Picture of my garage while I was building the cabinetry, note the small, narrow space.

My peg board holds my pipe wrenches, cords, occasional use tools and a ton of stuff from electric fence power supply, oil pan and valve covers from a chevy 350 , extra chain saw chains, gate opener, loaner tools (like my old sawzall ), fencing wood clamps, extra welding lead, and on and on and on.

It doesn't replace a toolbox it is in addition to toolbox.

For those that do use pegboard, how do keep those hooks from coming off every time you grab a tool?

my hooks came with little black plastic "anchors" that bridge the hook and lock into the adjacent holes. Seem to work pretty well. Got my hooks at Home Depot.

It makes me crazy when the hooks come out. On the ordinary style hooks, I've used small black screws to hold the hook in place.

But there are also hooks that come with screws that are sized to snug themselves into the holes. Stay-Put brand is available at McMaster-Carr. These were cut with a bolt cutter so that they'd hold pliers instead of hammers. (The only downside to the Stay-Put stuff is that it's more expensive.)

I figure I can use this photo in the peg board thread, the tool box and the hammer thread.

I use peg board for the bigger item that would fill up my limited box space.
I like the 2 prong ones that stick out 4 or 6 inches, I can hang pipe wrenches, C clamps, ect. I also like I can pair them up to hang hammers and braces.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Lots of good info here in this thread. Tonight I placed some new cabinets in the top of the garage wall. I still got two more to put up. I'm going to try to clean up/organize my board a little. It has become a catch all for anything that I didn't feel like putting up. The cabinets were from my mothers kitchen before the remodel project. I painted them black and put new handles and hinges on them. They should help me get organized. I will try to get some updated pics soon. Thanks Russ
