Hello, I am just about to the lighting stage of my pole barn. it is a 40x48x16 barn, I will be using it for an automotive shop. I know these questions have been beaten to death but I would like some recommendations on good brands of lights, spacing and anything else anyone could share, Thank you!!

wow those are nice, looks like there 220 volt? not that that's a problem.
I put 8 of these 6 lamp fixtures in my 64x36x14' high barn.
there bright, my only complaint is about half the ballast have failed and the lights are not on that much

Not a big fan of that type of light especially at only 16'. For what looks to be sold straight from china it does look pretty well documented.
Some of the time they will have a lower grade, off brand ballast if they came from the box store. Definitely check inside before buying. A decent ballast should last 10+ years in a commercial environment.

I agree, I have 4 T12 18 year old ones in the house garage that still work fine.
I bought these from homedepot, they were about $85 each plus the tubes.
so they weren't cheap.
there suppose to have a 5 year warranty but when they started failing after a couple of years I called Lithonia they said the ballasts are warranty by the ballast manufacturer.........I said really? some 5 year warranty.
anyway I did get a hold of the ballast manufacturer and after a few calls they did warranty them..........there all out of warranty now so I'm on my own. (2011)
But they are nice and bright, as long as there working.

Seems like the stuff at the box stores usually have cheap ballasts, same exact fixture at an electrical supplier will have a name brand like advance, osram, ect.
I bought 166 of those IBeam 6xT8 fixtures from a commercial lighting supplier and they have been great. I think we had 3 ballast failures in 15 years. They are run 24x7, never turned off except every 5 years to clean and change bulbs. When Home Depot had the almost identical part number on sale for $79.95, I bought 4 for my home shop. They are clearly a "contractor select" version designed to sell for less. I haven't had any failure but they are clearly a cheap version.
Another version of the items getting cheaper. I have a two story parts storage rack. The lower aisles have 7'9" ceiling so each have a solid run of 8' T-12 single bulb fixtures. I'm upgrading the ballasts to electronic for efficiency and found about 3/4 still have the original ballasts in them, still working fine after 42 years.

I bought 4 high bays six bulbs in each from Four Bros mounted in a 30x40 15ft tall mounting height and they put out a ton of light very bright. 19,000 lumens each

Hi Platonic, it says the greentek does not have surface mounting brackets available but your image shows lights that are surface mounted? Do you have a link to those per chance?

Actually the image is misleading. The garage ceiling is 16', if you open above linked Dialux report you'll see on page 2 that they're hanging at 15.5'.
If you wanted to convert the GreenTek to surface mount you will need to install rivnuts in the 4 corner housing holes and find suitable brackets - Beeslighting sells brackets, but you'll have to investigate the spec sheets to confirm fit. Please post pics if you do this as I've been waiting for someone to try it. I would expect Diva Lite brackets to fit.

Long time lurker... first time asking questions... I am investigating my options for lighting a pole barn similar in size to what KRAM02 is building. I have read through the various lighting threads and most recently the two threads focusing on the High Bay fixtures for use with 16' ceilings. I have to admit I am a little overwhelmed/confused with all of the different ideas and options.
My interior space will be 39' x 39' x 16' high walls with an open ceiling. There will be sheet rock painted white on the 16' high walls. The ceiling will be open trusses with a white FSK vinyl covering the insulation under the 4/12 pitch roof. I have one 12' x 14' overhead door centered on the front (West) wall. The building will be used primarily for storage of motorcycles and tinkering on my other weekend projects...
I have worked up a lighting simulation using the Visual Interior Tool and the GreenTek/James 110W LED fixtures with a 4 x 4 arrangement. It is showing 119fc with the lights suspended at 15' off of the floor which seems pretty high. Does anyone have any feedback on using the 110W LED fixtures in this arrangement in a building this size? Is this the sixteen fixtures going to be overkill in the area I have? When I change the arrangement to 3 x 4 it drops the Illuminance to 89fc.
I am planning to suspend the fixtures on the included V hooks and chains. Can these fixtures be used with a pigtail added? Or would I be better to consider direct wiring?

119fc is overkill for the use you described. A concrete parking garage will be around 5fc. Typical working warehouse illumination levels are in the 10-30fc range. For reference, a high school classroom is normally targeted around 30fc. Typical office space is about the same. A working machine shop or automotive shop, anywhere where folks are doing work with their hands, should be targeted for 100-ish fc. You need to over light a little bit because when you start adding in cabinets, machines, etc, you lose a little reflectance.

I used James from LED Lighting Wholesale; not a huge selection... however, they are very easy guys to work with. They actually sent me double my order and had to call me and beg me to send back half! Lol. They handled the mixup...
My LED High Bay project is detailed in my signature. It was a learning experience, but my ceilings look amazing and I have more light than I need!
