I am looking at buy 15ish 2ft linear high bay lights for my shop. Whats everyone thoughts on buying cheaper lights off the internet vs buying a more reputable brand? It would probably be 1/2 or maybe even 1/3 as much for similarly rated lights.

I have seen many High Bay lights abandoned in place because once the area was in use or changed they were not accessible.

If you buy cheap fixtures make sure they are where you can get to them for repairs and replacement, with the idea they will need it more often then a higher end fixture.

Just finished putting 11 HERO series (250w) lights up from Hyperlite (https://hi-hyperlite.com), no problems yet, dimmable, wicked bright. Not sure where they fall in the range of brands out there.

These are trivial to replace from a ladder. Wiring comes terminated with a plug, and its supported by a hook. I will say from an efficiency standpoint, if the LED fixtures support dimming, hook it up. I can go from a 1.5A draw up to 25A split between two circuits depending on how bright I want it to be in the shop. Break it up into areas with multiple dimmers, make the workspace brighter without wasting too much electricity....

I'm going with well-reviewed product on amazon when its time to pull the trigger on LED highbays. Many products start there nowadays before a reseller/distributor gets into the food chain.

You get what you pay for. Buy cheap get cheap.

You can pay more and still get ****. Too easy these days.

In an industrial setting we have had problems with the light output of LED High bays because they rely on reflectors. We have found a lamp that is a lot flatter than a traditional conical lamp. We are trying to retrofit existing 1500W fixtures

If they're not UL, ETL, or CSA Listed, I wouldn't buy them. If the fixture exists on the DLC website, that's a plus. Without DLC, lumen output and efficiency claims should be considered suspect. I wouldn't put much weight on reviews as your average consumer doesn't know how to gauge the quality of a light fixture - typically stating things like "They're bright", which is a useless comment.

alex2929, LED fixtures can be made cheap if you use crappy diodes and drivers along with thin steel and low grade plastic lenses. You can also skip any engineering costs if you dont care about focusing the light into usable beams. You dont need to worry about mitigating any heat from the components, either. You can do all of that and still make it look exactly the same as a more expensive fixture. Then you can sell them on ebay and Amazon and get good reviews because no one that buys them on those two sites knows what to look for when determining a good fixture from a bad one.
As mentioned, look for UL/CSA/ETL/DLC. Good highbays should have a 70% life rating of 200,000 hours. **** fixtures only have a death rating of 50,000 hours.
Good luck,
CD

Hoping you have an opinion on these lights:

I think they replaced a light you referenced in another thread.
